autolocking diff

Forum:

HI,

I want to put on a auto locking diff on my 1991 fourtrak, has this been done before, if so where do i get the parts?

thanks,

Phil

do you mean lsd

i believe you are on about an LSD ( limited slip differential), if so good luck on finding one in this country, wish i had them, rare as rare, they do exist but mainly in other countrys, there is a company in germany that make vacuum operated diff locks for fourtrak axles, they are expensive about £600 i think, the company is called offrotec, just fit good grippy tyres instead and give it some beans....

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

There is such a thing as an

There is such a thing as an auto locking diff. No idea if they are avalible for 4traks, or how much. All I know is that the guy I pit crewed for on the hill rally circuit a good few years back had one fitted to the Sailsbury on the back end of his Land Rover 90. It was a majour pain, and we endid up taking it out at a 15 min service. that was fun. Anyway it worked (if memory serves) be replacing the 4 gears in the centre of the diff. It wouls alow a small diffrence in speed between the two half shafts (like an LSD), but once pushed beyond what it wated to do would lock solid until the preasure from both half shafts returned to nearly equal.

Basicly though my prefurance would be fiddle breakes. The trak is ideal for this mod as the two rear wheels have indipendent hand break cables all the way to where the hand break lever is anyway. The problem is getting the fiddles to do there thing, and the normal hand break to work for the MOT (asuming it's a road car too).

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Everyone in the know has

Everyone in the know has been waiting for my reply to come.

Auto locking difflocks are (actually read were) available for the F70,75,80,85 series Daihatsus. They are made by TracTech in the US. They are Detriot Lockers. In the normal on road position, they are actually locked, and unlock when wheel traction overcomes internal spring pressure. So, in reality, they are actually automatic unlocking differentials.

I dont know where the idea that they cause additional wear/damage to vehicles comes from. Probably illinformed opinions that are not from real life experience. I have had Detriot Lockers fitted front and rear to my F75 for over 10 years. No additional wear and tear on the vehicle. I have blown 1 CV joint in my front end in all that time. And that was due to the additional traction available, not due to a problem with the locker itself. You have to see and experience the difference one, let alone two diff locks makes to the off road capabilities of any vehicle.
Believe me, I have well and truly shown up more "capable" vehicles and left people standing in awe at the abilities of a mere Daihatsu Rocky.

Oh, and dont bother contacting TracTech to buy a locker. They ceased production about 8 years ago.

Cheers
Bundy

Not Auto Lockers

Detroit lockers are not auto locking diffs, these were an offshoot of the auto locking diff for fitment to road vehicles, they eliminated most of the problems caused by auto lockers. While effective on road, they were very good off road, and as you correctly state, actually auto unlockers.
Problems were the shock loadings applied to prop shafts and half shafts, and chipping of the pinion teeth, this is why they were produced as complete axles with newer and stronger internals. Prop shafts were eating UJ's with the power struggling through both wheels, particularly those with wider wheels.

Equipment was bought up by Auto Ring and Pinion in Illinois, they still produce spares for the original Detroit lockers.

Nearly Forgot

Detroit lockers are still available, the brand was bought out by Eaton, they purchased the name and the last designs produced by TracTech. Since this acquisition they have modified and updated their designs.

Auto Lockers

Auto lockers are not LSD or air lockers, they are what their name implies, automatic locking differentials.
In simple terms, they work in a similar manner to a LSD, but use either a set of locking clutches, or a set of positive locking engagement pins. These lock the differential solidly, and this will present a problem if the safety clutches pressure is set too high, particularly in wet weather.
Developed for the construction industry, mainly on large off road plant without the complexity of hydrostatic transmissions, and electronically controlled drive systems, they are commonly used to replace tracked vehicle differentials on older machines.
Scaled down versions are available from the States on a hand built, type specific system, so theoretically are available for every vehicle. Problems are that they are not cheap, they are not suitable for road use, and wear out internals at an alarming rate, so are only used by hardened off roaders with pure off road vehicles.
