Wiering spots to a Sporti
Wiering spots to a Sporti can be a pain, as the headlights are switched earths. Ie: there is power to the headlights all the time the side lights are switched on, and it is dependent on which wire from the headlight bulbs is earthed via the dip / main switch and the dim / dip relay as to weather you get dim/dip, dip beam or main beam.
One sugestion for getting around the problem is to take your trigering feed for the spotlight relay from the main beam warning light in the dash. I have not tried this myself.
The way I did it was to take the triggering feed from the feed to the headlights, and the trigering earth from the return from the headlights to the dim / main switch on the stering columb.
This has the effect of putting the spots in parallel with main beam. However they also come on with the dim/dip (side lights), as this uses the main beam circuit with a lower voltage through it. I have overcome this by cutting the wire that tells the dim/dip relay (found up behind the dash in one of the front footwells (I have found them on either side depending of age of car)) that the ignition is on. This means the relay is tricked into thinking the ignition is always off, and only swithes on the side light circuit when you turn the lights on one click. This is legal, as the law says you must have front side lights or dim/dip headlights, not both.

Light up the Night
Hi.
I wired my spots up independant to the head light circiut via a switch /warning light on dash, taking a feed off the ignition to energize a relay which then fed power via a fuse/wire from the battery to the spotlights. Not sure of the legality of this but not had any problems from MOT tests.

I did it the cheap and nasty
I did it the cheap and nasty way. I spliced the spot wires into the headlamp loom on each side. So the spots come on with the main beam. I have 90/100w bulbs and 55w in the spots, so on main beam the each headlamp loom is powering 155w, dangerous I know and it was scary the first time I switched them of, waiting for the wiring to melt. Its been OK so far, just waiting till I get some spare time to do it properly.
