My stick won't work! Please help.

Forum:

I have recently purchased a Fourtrack 2.8 TDX-SE. Fantastic car, I've got a problem though, the head lights work but the full beam doesn't. (At all, not even flash) I've never been accused of being tight before but I would like to know if I can avoid buying a new indicator stalk if I don't have to. I've replaced both headlight bulbs to no avail. Any ideas will be appreciated! Help

Remove the cowls and the switch, but leave it plugged in, get a voltmeter and identify the main feed in (engine running). Switch on the lights and operate the switch with the voltmeter connected to each output in turn, one will be the full beam. This can be confirmed by flashing the switch and watching the voltmeter, if you have no output on any of the terminals, it is a duff switch.

If you have an output, it could be the relay, identify this and check its operation, if this too is ok it is a wiring fault somewhere in the circuit.

This assumes you have checked the fuses and they are OK.

A resonably common problem

A resonably common problem is that the contacts for the lights get burnt over time. Eventually the power can't get through. Have fixed two wagons myself with this problem. Very easy as this is stone age tecnology.
Take off stearing wheel.
Remove columb cover.
Can't remember wether you have to slide the indicator / windscrean wiper / headlight stalk asembly off the columb or not? But on one side of the asembly or the other there is a box with plenty of wires going into and out of it.
Remove the lid to this box. Inside are the copper contacts that make all the stalk opperated lights work.
Very carful not to bend the contacts out of shape, clean up with sand paper / knife blade / whatever works best for you.
Put it all back together (after confirming power is getting through alright).
