help, clutch doesnt seem to work properly on 1st and reverse

Forum:

hi my daughter is having a great problem with her R reg. Rocky, engaging 1st and reverse gear, when it does eventually engage, often with a lot of teeth grating noises, the clutch bites as soon as the pedal comes off the floor, this isnt right is it eh.

somebody i spoke to said it was a hydraulic clutch, i had a look and of course it is a cable, so thinking i could perhaps adjust it, where the cable goes into the bulkhead and i spot a Jubilee Clip in a very inappropiate place !, please see picture, me thinks the previous owner knew the clutch was dodgy !!.

Ah, yes, that does look like

Ah, yes, that does look like someone trying to cheet changing the clutch. That circlip type afair the jubalie clip is holding away from the bulkhead is the proper clutch adjuster. Slides into whichever groove on the cable outer gives you the adjustment you want.

I'd change it asap, and hope the flywheel hasn't taken too much damage from an over worn plate.

If that doesn't sort it, look up 'gearbox mainshaft nut' in the serch facility.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

a bit worse now

cheers buddy, good of you to post your humble opinion.

It so happens i am using the Rocky tommorrow to take our horse trailer to get it serviced, which is near to where i work, the "clutch" trouble has got a mite worse today, so i am going to take it to a garage workshop (also near to where i work) and hope they can give an expert opinion on the trouble.

trouble is i might not be able to get home again !, LOL.

of course manovering the trailer about forces more use of the gears than normal it has now got so bad that i might be tempted to change gear by turning the engine off, engaging gear, with the clutch down and starting it up again in gear. LOL.

First gear and Reverse issue.

Hi Tim

Did you resolve this issue? I have what sounds to be exactly the same problem with mine.
It's so bad now if I miss getting it into gear as I'm rolling to a stop I have to turn the ignition off and restart it after selecting first gear!!
Just wondering if in fact it was the clutch that was your problem or if it is gearbox related.
Thanks in advance.
