WATCH YOUR PILOT SHAFT BEARING

Forum:

Hi all, Was just putting a new clutch in my works Sportrac 1.6 efi, when i pulled the clutch cover off i found that the centre plate friction material was worn down to the rivets on the cover side and fine on the flywheel side (thank god). whilst changing the release bearing and cleaning the first motion shaft i noticed that there werent any marks on it where the pilot bearing would have been, checking the bearing in the end of the crank it had worn away by about 3mm. I can only guess that this is a new gearbox prob been fitted when the old one had to be replaced because the pilot bearing had worn had we not spotted it we might be looking at yet another new gearbox. When looking on our sportrack CD workshop manual it says they have a ball roller race fitted but ours was a brass bush. The local dealers couldnt get hold of one for 3 days so we turned one down out of brass stock pressed it in and rebuilt it. It works fine. So Watch out for the bearing or it could cost you a box. Sportrak Clutch

Hi Paintandtrim, Of all the 4x4 vehicles available i think the sportrak is one of the best for fitting a clutch in, just make sure you get underneath about a week before you plan on doing the job, wire brush the gearbox crossmember bolts and spray them in plenty of WD40 (they have a habit of snaping off). You also have to pull the carpet back from under the dash to get to the gear and transfer levers and remember that although the gearbox casing is alloy the internals are heavy the balencing point is at the front of the transfer case.
