fourtrak swivel joint seal, manual free wheel

Forum:

Hi guys i'm new to 4x4's. I need to change the rubber seal on the swivel joint cos mines leaking somthing black, a bit to close to the brake disc for comfort. I've got the service manual but it's very long winded and not very clear. Do i have to completly strip the free wheel hub apart to get to the disc or does it come of in one lump?

any help will be greatfuly recieved

Do you mean the CV boot?

Do you mean the CV boot? Around the drive shaft? Then yes you do have to work your way in, one layer at a time. It's not to big a deal actually. Drop the break caliper away from the disk. Take the FWH apart to expose the wheel baring retaining nut. Remove nut, and pull off hub. The disk is bolted to the back of the hub. Then you can sort the boot.

You can get non standard (one size fits all) glue together CV boots, which don't require you to dismantel anything, but from my expirience they are worse than usless.

Sorry. Just read your post

Sorry. Just read your post again. Your not talking about an Indipendent are you? If you mean the swivel housing seal on a live axle, that isn't to hard to do at all. There should be two metal plats bolted to the back of the swivel housing. These hold the seal onto the ball joint. I am sure the rubber under these plates is all in one peice? If it is in two you need not remove anything els to change it. As I said I am fairly sure it is a comlpear circle around the axle. To get it off you only need to remove the break caliper compleatly from the axle (one bolt, and slid the other end off the carrier), then undi the for bolts on top of the swivel housing and the four underneeth that hold the swivel barings in place. Once you have pulled the barings out (don't lose the shims) you can pull the whole hub asembly (compleat with half shaft) out of the axle. swap the rubber seal, then bolt all back together. Much eisier than dismanteling the FWH so you can leave the half shaft in the axle case.

Depending where your new

Depending where your new barings are from, there should be a selection of shims with them. If not try Millner's.
