daihatsu fourtrak 4wd not work

Forum:

hi i have a daihatsu fourtrak 1987 it will not engaging 4wd it the one with the button on dash. ive read one of the posts on hear but did not work thay said the solonoids not working or rubber plunger not pull back far enough, but the solonoid seems to work ok it seems to suck and plunger looks ok no splits or holes.

i just wondered if i left it in 4wd and do not lock the hubs would that be ok.
thanks

Hi and Welcome

Hi and welcome.

A selection of previous posts for you to look at. Are you sure you are not getting drive to the front prop, when you engage the switch. Are you geting drive when you engage 4Lo via the stick, dash switch not required for this operation.

hi getting no drive in low

hi getting no drive in low or high, ive took a bit off a behind that there is a black plunger with a 10mm bolt in the middle i undone the bolt and took the plunger off and leaved the shaft forward and it engaged 4wd should the shaft move freely?

thanks

Hi. The shaft you are

Hi.

The shaft you are refering to, should move with minimal force using the vacuum applied through the system.

4 Lo is selected by the transfer stick selecting the low range gearing and the vacuum switch engaging the dog clutch/gear for the front prop, the selection of 4 Lo automaticaly engages the vacumum switch. 4 Hi is engaged by the vacuum switch just engaging the dog clutch/gear for the front prop via the dash switch.

Due to the snowy weather, you could, as you indicated, engage the front axle drive and rely on switching the manual hubs , lock/unlock as required, this is not a recomended option, as you would have to get out and unlock the hubs when on a solid surface, ie -tarmac or YOU WILL damage the transmission, this may be why you have this problem.

Just remember these trucks are Part Time 4x4 and should never be driven on hard surfaces in 4x4, as they have NO center differential in the gearbox
