noises

Forum:

not sure if its a problem or im overreacting.

when i drive in 4lo i can hear a few different noises like straining and slight grinding.
it only happens nown and again and only under high stress ie down steep hills and also a bit of suspension noise over rough terrain.
whae i do a complete stop and restart there is nothing and also no noises when driving on the road

are these actually normal noises due to stresses of the system or should there be no noise what so ever.

see if you can hear anything bad the noise im on about seem to be magnified by the recording

squeak, rattle ,whine and roll.

Hi.

Firstly you have a truck which has probably a lot of miles under its bonnet, possibly not been all that well looked after re oil levels. Even my truck has a number of different whines from the gearbox, dependant on the use/load on the transmission, but just audible.

Straining and slight grinding sounds!!!, are you using L4 on hard surfaces, ie no potential for wheels to slip and release tension built up in system. It takes a lot for transmission wind to make its self felt, steering difficuly and possible whining from the transmission.

Suggest you not just check the oil levels in the main box/tran box also diffs, but change them all (EP 90 Oil) and grease the prop ujs, steering links ( if greasable). front axle steering joints, bit of a problem as they should be filled with 500cc of grease, but you cannot check !!or empty without dismantling, so remove filler on top of axle hub and pump in a small quantity of new grease if you feel so inclined.

Quieten the suspension, grease the spring leaves. My method, part each leaf with a "hammer through screwdriver" sqirt in some spray type grease, ( I use motorbike Non Fling synthetic chain grease in a rattle/spray can), this can be done with out jacking or removing wheels, this will alow the leaves to slide more easily. Check the rubber bush's are in place on both ends of the shocks and not worn, check that the rubber bump stops are still present above both axles.

Also check the rubber/nylon/poly bushes at the spring ends for break up, you can purchase a lubricant from motor factors for the spring bushes, in a rattle/spray can. Or as I do ,purchase a 5ltr can of WD40 and decant in to a small trigger spray bottle, and spray anything that may squeak (it seems thicker than the spray can stuff, and its cheaper).

thanks again ews ill be doing

thanks again ews ill be doing all you say ive been planning it for next week ive watched vids on youtube and ordered the manual for the info on diff oil capacitys and filler locations etc.
ill do what you say with the leaf springs as well thats a good idea.

no i have not used 4hi or lo in any on road or hard surface conditions i read the how too sections about this and transmission wind up is now drumed in,it something i new nothing about before and probably would of not know, had i not read them.

i was witing for manual but

i was witing for manual but may as well order now as well

EP 90 quantities

Hi.

Capacity- Main gearbox -2.9Lt
Transfer Box -1.3ltr
Diff (each) -1.5Ltr

From Owners Manual, F70/F90 series

Filler level/plugs on drivers side of gearboxs. Filler a pain to do on main box , see if you can obtain a 1ltr EP90 sqeezy bottle with a spout and keep refilling it.

thanks again mate im looking

thanks again mate im looking forward to doing it now.

ive put some short video links on original posts of me practicing off road dont know if you can hear anything on them compared to the sounds you get from your vehicles.

thanks all

sorry this probably should go

sorry this probably should go in problems but i did not want to start a new thread with it.

i changed gearbox oil , it was overfilled as about 600ml came out of filler plug hole before id opened the bottom plug but the oil that came out was good and similar to what i put back in.

i then started on the front diff i opened the upper filler plug as suggested to ensure i can refill and again, and this also was overfilled
but this time the oil that came out was very thick id say similar in thickness to a mcdonalds thick shake(sorry for that could not think of a better comparison)and alot thicker than what went back in,ive drove it home and all seems to be well no noises or anything , but im worried that someone has put this thick stuff in for a reason.
but i dont know any advice would be apriciated.
im not going to do the back diff untill ive asked you for advice

thanks

Oils.

Hi.

Which box, main or transfer. There is a possibility that oil is transfering from one box to the other, due to worn seals, there has been a post on this previously, but it could have been over filled.

The first time I drained my trucks front diff, the oil came out like dark green/yellow syrup, reason was the axle breather tube was missing, and the oil was severly contaminated with water. rear diff's oil was clean. Though the oil may look okay, its properties will, assumming it has never been changed will have degraded.

Changing the oils will give you piece of mind, you will now know they are up to the job, and contain the correct amount. AND check the diff breather tubes are in place, that they are fixed high up,to prevent water ingress to the diff.

As a second user or may be more , one never knows what has been used previously. I have come across a Land Rover which had leaking seals in which the owner had replaced half the oil in the hubs and front diff with grease, and this ran out cold, just like treackle.

The axles on a Fourtrack are pretty well bullet proof, it is rare to hear of any problems except for the auto front hubs.

Make use the "Search" box, put in Axle Breathers or similar, lots of info

glad to hear that, thats what 4x4s should be.

Sounds like !!!! ????. for a starter for ten .

Hi.

I think your idea of posting a youtube video to get trouble shootings assistance is very novel. The soundtrack seemed to full of suspension knocks/noise and what sounded like water slossing about, allso very little engine noise, could not identitfy transmission noise.

yeah might make a good

yeah might make a good segment on a mechanics tv quiz show.
