i understand that fourtraks have a PTO take off on the transfer case and that a factory winch was once available, anybody know of where i could get one from?

The original winches were a shaft drive item, and are not now available new, they are available secondhand but may require overhauling. It is very much a case of hunting around until you find a good one at a reasonable price.

Search the 4 WD magazines for original winches, or the breakers for a vehicle which had one fitted.
Many utility companies vehicles had them fitted as standard, particularly the water companies and cabling companies as they were perfect for their uses.
