f78 rear disc conversion

Forum:

after offroading monday i need to replace my rear shoes as mud/sand and water have got in there and worn them out so im thinking about doing a rear disc conversion but would like to know if any one has done it before and what disc's and calipers did you use thanks parrot

Im working on this too

Right, its 100% possible, 100% doo able, in america its done all the time, they love there leaf sprung rock climbing toys over there and most things on leaf springs date back to the romans so have drum brakes fitted to the axles lol, its been done on fourtraks, its been done on this website, assassin might say something against it lol but i hate rear drum brakes, no matter how well maintained they are ten minutes into playing in the quarry gloop and you have no handbrake and front brakes only!! what you need is a spare axle to work on, suzuki sj discs and something like a rover 800 series set of calipers, as these have handbrake attachments, the rest is trial and error, bracketry and testing, to convert an sj to rear disc is soooo easy but the fourtrak is trickier, however USE google, there is so much info out there from the usa on this sort of stuff, we are behind in the off roading modding world over here compared to them.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Why would i have something to

Why would i have something to say against it? my only problem is if it is done correctly and is a safe conversion.

Unfortunately i have seen the results of too many bodged conversions, and even lost a good friend to such bodged conversions. Unfortunately you do not recover from death, what makes it worse is when it was not even his fault as he did not do the conversion, but it is no comfort to his wife and children.

thanks have you got any

thanks have you got any pics,i was thinking of useing suzuki discs and rover/ford or renault calipers but i will go in to unipart some time to look in there books so i can match the disc's with the calipers as best as i can,i agree with what assassin has said and when i do it i will take my truck of the road and before it goes back on i will get atleast 3 different engineers reports so that im/my insurance are happy.

1 more thing before i even think about it is what grade of steel i need for the retaining ring/caliper mount so that when i get it milled i know its right
thanks to all and any links anyone has would be good and mine it coil not leaf

ps what have people done about break bais as the rear disc's will work better now or does that not make a different as i dont want them to lock up before the front ones do
