lowering the gearing

hi

i have a 1987 D reg daihatsu running on 31 x 10.5 x 15" tyres but because i am trailering it about i do not need higher gearing needed to run on the road. was wondering if anybody could giv me any advice on lowering the gearingand how to?

What engine is it

What engine is it (terbo/intercooled/none), as diffrent transfure ratio's were used on diffrent engines. Fiting an earlier transfur could give the result you want. The lowest was the Petrol modle, but if you want to change the whole gearbox and transfure for ease, the petrol gearbox has a diffrent input shaft. This can still be swapped over more easily than the transfure box.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

shes a turbo but also the gearbox is starting to go aswell so is there any way i could also fit an earlier gearbox or are they all the same ratios

I heard that the non-turbo Diesel gearbox was a 20% lower ratio. The Petrol box and difs are the lowest ration however...

Use the gearbox and transfer box from a non turbo early model (will fit easy) and the differentials in the axles from the petrol version, youll crawl then.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Are you sure the diffs are a diffrent ratio on the F80/85? I'm faily certain the only diffrence is in the transfur. The F20/25 had lower ratio diffs than the F50/55, but they had the same gear/transfur box (except the bell housings).

F20/F50 ran the similar gearbox/transfer case combination with different diff ratios to compensate for the very different power output and delivery. The post '84 Fourtraks are just the same, the transfer ratios are the same across the range but as posted the petrol and non turbo diesel share the same gearbox ratios which are similar but slightly higher than the F20/F50 where as the turbo diesel has ratios around 20% higher than the non turbo. All the diesel models including the independants have 3.3:1 diff ratios but the petrol models have 3.9:1. The F50 runs 3.5:1 diffs while the F20 runs the holy grail 4.7:1 units, these will fit into the fourtrak diffs but the ring and pinion need fitting to the Fourtrak carriers as the halfshafts have different numbers of splines.
In my 1990 F70 I run a '95 turbo intercooled diesel through the original non turbo gearbox connected to an '88 manual transfer from a turbo diesel and have petrol axles with 33" tyres. This combination gives a top speed of around 70mph but is bloody quick when accelerating and crawls along nicely at tickover in low range.
I have the ring and pinions from an F20 waiting for when I find a use for them but have decided to fit a set of 80 series landcruiser axles to my car as I already had them and they have cross axle diff locks and massive discs front and rear. They are 3.6:1 diffs by the way so I will change the ring and pinion if needed.

rear axle prop flange on the landcruiser axle matches the Fourtrak prop perfectly, Have yet to check the front. I'm considering adding a few inches to the wheelbase when I do the swap so may go with custom props anyway or possibly just add spacers at each end of the existing ones.
