Deliberate Off Road Route Obstructions

Forum:

While doing some research recently, i came across an alarming rapidly rising trend of off road routes being deliberately blocked. These deliberate obstructions were not the usual small piles of rocks placed there by anti 4X4 brigades, but fully engineered obstructions requiring heavy equipment to construct them. Many simply appear overnight and take similar styles of construction.

Deep holes are excavated, these are deep enough to swallow a 4X4 and have a properly constructed entrance and a flat exit so once a vehicle is in it cannot get out. Most have an entry formed from large logs or railway sleepers to form steps, and these are heavily pinned so they do not move, and the holes are filled with water so they cannot be seen, and are so slippery that driving out in impossible.

Large mounds of earth or rocks are deposited to considerable heights across routes, these are generally in excess of 100 tonnes or more, so cannot be driven over or around, or moved with a shovel.

Gates are nailed shut where they are wooden, the gate is nailed with heavy nails to the wooden gatepost, metal gates usually have several heavy duty chains wrapped round them with many heavy duty locks securing them.
The one common denominator is the fact that all these deliberate obstructions appear overnight, and need heavy plant to excavate holes so deep, or to move so much earth in such a short time frame, and there is always an access or route for pedestrians.

This discounts most as being irate farmers, or the previously thought bomb holes dug for recovery companies to make a few easy quid for themselves. Often it is farmers or forestry workers who report these deliberate obstructions, local authorities are suddenly having to deploy considerable resources to clear them.

Many locl authorities are becoming increasingly concerned by this deliberate vandalism of legal off road routes, particularly the safety aspects as they are legally liable for such routes, and any accidents occuring on them where personal injuries are sustained.
Many cases have been reported of holes being excavated to 4 metres deep, filled with water and a vehicle trapped i them means the risk of death is very real to the occupants.

Should we set up a section on this site to record such deliberate incidents, this would help local authorities to establish when they are dug, where they are being dug, and provide evidence of the frequency of such occurences. Police forces are also concerned, they thing a spate of plant thefts may be directly connected to these incidents, and they would welcome any help in catching these criminals.

Advice to anyone encountering such incidents is to make a note of their location, photograph them imediately and in as much detail as possible, and possibly with the date and time in the photograph.
Report incidents immediately to the local authority responsible, the Police, or the National Park Authority if it is in a national park. Do not touch or tamper with them as they may contain items of evidencial value, and try to warn other users of their existance.

sounds like a good idea.

sounds like a good idea. Round here (Near Lymington) we get people laying trees across the lanes, they seem to just cut down trees that are already there. I know not half as bad as 4m deep holes filled with water, but its still annoying as it makes it impossible to pass, as it will generally be wedged between other trees meaning you cant just pull it out of the way. Recently one of the other guys has started carrying a chainsaw just incase.

Who does this sort of thing

Who does this sort of thing and why? The only person/people who would care is the farmer/land owner? Why would anyone else get involved?

Much of the evidence suggests

Much of the evidence suggests it is not farmers as they are as inconvenienced because they are most regular users of the lanes. Most of the reports are coming from farmers themselves, although it may well be farmers in a minority of cases.
From what i can ascertain, many of the reports state that farmers in the local areas do not have the necessary equipment for such deep excavations.

Why would anyone be anti-4x4?

Why would anyone be anti-4x4? What do they think is wrong about green laning? I've never heard of any group like this, so please can you explain!

Cheers.

It has been suggested it an

It has been suggested it an extreme group from a large number of anti off road groups who have clubbed together to perform such acts. Based on what i can find, it is possible, but there is not enough firm evidence to conform or deny this, and the Police are remaining tight lipped.

An enquiry to a senior Police officer friend inferred this was the case, but he would neither confirm or deny this. He claimed the Police welcomed reports as it would provide "intelligence" which suggests they are investigating this trend, and it is as severe as reports suggest.

Quite a few farmers have

Quite a few farmers have access to their fields from green lanes. I have a rural/agricultural/equine background if there's "holes" such as 4m deep, this worries me greatly, if their filled with water you could loose a horse into one, or any type of stock or machinery of which the costs in these times are huge.

4 x 4 saboteurs

Hi all.

The comment by "assassin" is shocking as to the extreme measures that the some factions of the anti offroad /4 x4 groups will go to. We all know that we are not the flavour of the month with some other users of the the routes that are still permissible to use with a vehicle, no matter that many 4 x4 groups send out working parties for repairs and advocate non use in winter, and work with local authorities on the use and maintenance of these routes.

I find it hard to imagine that excavators can operate, and these traps (no other words for them) can be constructed with out the knolwledge of adjacent land owners, or are they working under the assumption that they are autherised to "repair / prevent access by 4 x4's" or repairthe damage caused by 4 x4's, even at night Unknw ?.

I find it hard to believe no one is questioning their reason for being there. The type of obstruction mentioned in the post takes time to build, but note as "assassin" says they seem to leave access for walkers/Ramblers ! ! !. As for nailing up wooden gates and fitting chaing around others, all these folk need is only to carry a backpack with what they need, this even has implication for farmers who also need access to fields and stock.

May be this matter should be brought to the attention of the NFU and the CLA in the areas affected as well as the local authority and police.

If any of you are members of other Offroading organisations / Clubs consider posting a link to to the original article/post

There is an organisation, of who has members who are so vitriolic to horse riders, mountain bikers, moter bikers and 4x4 users, along with anti 4x4 groups, taking direct action against the right to use permited routes other that on foot or the right to own/use a 4x4 vehicle.

Be careful, out there. And always walk a section before driving it if it looks suspect and dip a stick in a odd looking wet section.

4x4 sabateurs

This is very disturbing.
any idea of an area/pattern or is this random?

This is why the Police and

This is why the Police and local authorities want information so they can identify trends and patterns. From what i can glean from unofficial (of course) sources the Police are working on one option of heavy plant being stolen in or adjacent to the locations.

Many of the anti 4X4 brigade

Many of the anti 4X4 brigade have relied upon spurious information, and blatent lies to promote their anti 4X4 message to a guillable public, and failed because their claims do not add up.
Local authority figures clearly show that walkers cause more damage to byways than vehicles, this is due to their huge numbers, and the councils repair costs pro rata. Independent research also shows that mountain bikes and horses create substantially more damage to the environment than the average 4X4, are there proposals to ban these.
The two feet ruts lie: an average 4X4 has around 8" of ground clearance so only farming or specialised vehicles such as forestry vehicles could cause this damage. Water is another important factor as this creates ruts and widens and deepens them.
4X4's are not made for cities: of course they are, they are designed as a compromise to be used on and off road, roads to my knowledge run through city centres.
4X4's are environmentally unfriendly: another now proven lie, the only in depth research into the issue concluded the Jeep Wrangler as the most environmentally friendly vehicle. 4X4's are also the largest user of secondhand (recycled) parts followed by classic cars. 4x4's have the longest lifespan of all types of common vehicle, around 250% of that of an average car, in simple terms for every 4X4 built we have to build 2.5 average family vehicles.

YDNPA were taken to court only last year for illegally closing off road routes, they failed to include all user groups and were subsequently prosecuted and made to open up the routes. How can such people be trusted to manage our byways when they are proven liars and incompetent.

Given some of th above facts which are a small representation of the anti's argument against 4X4's we can now at least understand their frustration. They have lied, posted spurious misinformation and have themselves been proven liars by the facts, facts which always emerge over the resounding PR such groups try to attract. Considering this it is understandable to some degree that a small proportion of such selfish people will form offshoots and resort to such nerferious and illegal tactics, its part of the culture of anarchy and illegal activities makes good media headlines.

odstructions

as someone new to offroading i'd to think i'm not intrenched in an ongoing battle, but it appears i've unwittingly strolled into one.
beening a nearly responsable person i've tried my hardest to learn about the types of lane i have use of.
i've started to look into doing my part in repair days. (anyone organising near southampon feel free to pm me.)
although i already feel marginalised i strongly feel that we as a group are on the right path (not a pun) working to maintain the by ways not over using and sticking to the law.
these acts of vandalism are desperate.
be careful out there but also don't react directly to them as a negative response is playing into there hands.

I have been allowed access to

I have been allowed access to one of the documents circulated to local authority senior management. Unfortunately, for legal reasons it cannot be copied, edited, and submitted for publication as i would have liked to have done.

Local authorities and other bodies are taking this problem seriously, Health & Safety being one issue, legal liability the other.

Strategic planning has now taken place to ensure a safe system of filling them in; while collecting evidence, to help with criminal investigations.

Initial intelligence highlights the most likely areas for these to be dug, many bodies are now monitoring such areas for suspicious activity. Many authorities are using covert cameras to monitor access to possible "vandalism" sites to help.

If you see such systems please do not touch them as they record everyone entering or leaving a lane. Some are made public, others are not.

This is an interesting link

This is an interesting link as someone on there has actually seen one of these deliberate excavations in Yorkshire. Unfortunately they did not have the means to take a picture for us all to see.
