Spare Wheel on the Bonnet?

Forum:

I'm finding the spare wheel on the rear door getting in the way and I would also like to modify the rear door, SO... Has anyone tried mounting the spare on the bonnet(hood) like it is on an old Landy? What problems if any? does it affect the front suspension? Did you have to stiffen up the hood or beef up the hinges?

Thanks

Spare on bonnet

I'm not sure if it can be done or about up-rating the suspension or anything (altho i'd have thought you may have to with all that weight on the front because you sometimes have to for winches and bullbars i think), but one problem some land rovers have is that the release spring on the bonnet (i.e the spring which 'pops' the bonnet open when you pull the release in the cab) isnt strong enough to lift the wheel too. So its a two man job - one pulling the release, the other helping the spring by lifting the bonnet!!

wheel

Very true about the two man job, (or carry a bit of wood for the lever. Visibility is reduced. You could wind up the fromt bars a bit to compansate for the weight tho. Personaly i would leave it on the back.

DESTROYER OF LANDROVERS.

.....And if you don't get the position right, you can end up putting the windscreen in when you lift the bonnet, i am told!

What do you drive? A LWB four

What do you drive? A LWB fourtrak? If so, and you really want to take the wheel off the rear door, and space in the rear isnt an issue, then lay the spare on the floor in the back, then build a false floor between the arches over the top.

Wheel on bonnet?

I drive a LWB fourtrak(Rocky) Leafsprung model. Space is the problem, with two kids & a dog and regularly hauling with the back full I was looking for something that didn't eat into the interior space. I was considering a half false floor to give me somewhere to stow tools and towing gear but it meant making the cargo space a pain to use when I do have the seats folded so I've boxed the areas under the rear seat sill as 'utility stowage'. If you've heard of someone successfully putting the spare on the bonnet I'd be interested. I was thinking of strapping it on for a trial run before I commit. (after I've done the timing belt, glow plugs, front swivel seals, disks and calipers).

Cheers
