1996 with 84k miles. starting becoming a prob. often just a clicking and occasional starter kicks but does not turn engine. sometimes needs up to 30 tries - or push start. some days works first turn.
any ideas?

sounds like sticky starter motor to me, if it sticks tap the starter gently, sometimes frees it. Not a hard job to change it, may need bendy arms though.

Hi.
Whip off the battery cables, and earth strap, and the starter motor cables and wire brush them clean. Often this is the cause of poor starter motor operation. If you feel the need to belt the starter with a hammer, its better to use the handle, not the head, or use a soft faced hammer.

If the electrical connections are fine, it will be the brushes, being worn means they occasionally work, other times they will not.
