f 20 info needed please

Forum:

hi guys
im new to the daihatsu 4x4 scene im mad on classic minis and 4x4's as you can see in the gallery this is the bastard child of the two scenes im going to be rebuilding her i know how to rebuild a mini but i need info on how to rebuild the f 20 running gear engine ect any help would be great cheers

can you be more specific?

There is a load of info on here and in the minds and garages of those who post here too. The brake stuff is pretty hard to come by (depends on the year - the later ones had discs up front), engine stuff is shared by some older Toyota models, gearbox and transfer box is very similar to fourtrak, diff bearings and wheel bearing stuff is from bearing specialists. Dealers have virtually nothing and most won't know what an F20 is, interior is probably DIY !!

I drove one for years and loved it, I have also dismantled two others, as have a few others on here. Still have quite a few parts lying around.

Post up any more specific questions and I'm sure that you'll find an answer.

Regards - Alastair

sorry

cheers guys sorry forgot to put the year its a 1980 f20 with drum brakes all round if that helps as to the interior thats not a problem cause the shell is a classic mini on top of the original chassis and running gear its still the standard 1.6 lump in her but only 2 wheel drive at the mo cause the front diffs been taken out cause the last owner broke it the pic of it is up on the gallery now asto any more info i dont know sorry i cant help more

A Mini shell on top of an F20

A Mini shell on top of an F20 chassis. Isn't that going to be very tall? I have seen several Suzuki SJ's hybreadised in this way, and only one worked well. The otheres just looked unstable, and to be honest... ugly.
The one that worked well was built by a lorry mechanic, and took about 3 years to compleat. That was a prety conversion. Don't know if it helped that the mini was a pickup.
The main reason I think though is that all the others had just plonked the shell onto the chassis, and bolted / welded it where it touched. This meant the dipped down part of the chassis (under the front seats with the original body) was good few inches bellow the floor of the mini shell. The pickup was cut underneeth to allow the shell to sit right down onto the lowest part of the chassis. Again I don't know if being a pickup made this possible, as in the standard shell I think you might loose the rear footwells doing it this way.
You may need to get a unique car test done by the ministary to be road legal.
Hybreads are hard work, require a lot of imaginative engenearing, and take a lot of time and money to do right. However you end up with a brilient unique car, which you will probably love.

If you find a latter front axle, with the disk breakes (they are so much better you would not belive) you can change the whole axle fiarly eisilly. Beware though. The F50 front axle looks identical, but has a diffrent ratio diff in it. I also seem to remember that the Long wheel base (F25 / F55) axle is sutelly diffrent, and does not fit, but I can't remember why at the mo.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

i was lucky

i was lucky in one respect the car has been on the road before and is currenty on a sorn all the extra tests have been done i just need to rebuild it.
yes there is a large gap between the floor and chassis rails but im going to be making extra storage in that space the overall weight of the car has gone down according to the paper work but ill be putting her on a weigh bridge when shes back on the road to make sure
shes defo ugly but that was one of the reasons i had it in the first place she was in top gear magazine many many moons ago too

The engine is a Toyota 12R

The engine is a Toyota 12R model which was fitted to early Hi-Lux and Hi-Ace vans, they are extremely reliable with 300,000 not uncommon if correctly maintained.

Gearbox is a Toyota model with different gear ratios, the transfer case is a Daihatsu, the axles are Toyota. Most were lifted from the early Hi-lux.

Many of the mechanical components can be sourced through specialists as many stil supply for the early Hi-Lux models. Most service components are easily available, but a little matching of specifications is necessary to find modern items sich as filters which fit.
