noise on accelleration - fourtrak '94

Forum:

When I put my foot on the accellerator quickly, or suddenly take it off, there is a metallic clinking sound coming from somewhere - difficult to pinpoint where - any ideas?

prop shaft

typical tinking noise of worn out universal joints on the prop shaft, easy to sort, lots of stuff on the site under search.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

same problem

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem on my 94 F78. Whenever I let out the clutch in 1st 2nd or 3rd there is a 'CLINK'.

To isolate the problem I removed the rear prop shaft and sure enough the noise is gone.

On closer inspection of the prop shaft I could see the grease marks where the shaft has been moving back and forth (not the UJ's but the joint about 1/3rd of the way along from the transfer box, e.g. http://www.milneroffroad.com/img/productImages/10896.JPG)

I've heard others say that this might be worn splines, but I can't see how this would allow the shaft to move back and forth? In fact I can't see any way to stop it moving back and forth, i.e. to take up the play - any ideas?

Cheers,

Lube

Worn splines is more of a

Worn splines is more of a clunk as the play is taken up as you accelerate or decellerate, you can feel it as well.

Most likely the UJ's so check for play in them, and also check any tinware underneath the vehicle, or heat shields on the exhaust.

The splines are there so the shaft can move up and down, as the rear axle becomes lower it increases the distance between the transfer case and rear axle. This is why it is splined and telescopic.

thanks assasin. so if this

thanks assasin. so if this 4mm or so of play is normal then perhaps it's the rear diff?

the clink is also audible when the vehicle is free wheeling with the clutch disengaged and alternately selecting 1st and 2nd gear. I initially thought this might be the gearbox, but since the noise is totally gone when driving with the rear propshaft removed this suggests it's either the prop shaft or the rear diff.

Also when listening for the noise with the door open it does sound like it's coming from towards the back.

sorted

ok sorted the clinking noise by doing two things:
packing the prop shaft with grease at all three points.
changing the oil in the rear diff.
I did as described in another thread, jacked one rear wheel up, put it in 1st (2wd) and moved the rear wheel back and forth. the noise seemed to be coming from the diff.

now i only hear the noise in reverse if i really drop the clutch and even then it's very slight.
cheers.

clinky noise

A mechanic pal has just been under the vehicle for a quick look, and says the noise is coming from the front end of the propshaft, at the joint. He moved the shaft around, with the car jacked up, and the noise happened when he moved the prop. He suggests greasing all the bits on the prop, and see if this has any effect.Sadly, I have not got a grease gun, or he would have done the job there and then, but he was in a hurry to leave. If not, further investigation is needed by my 'proper' mechanic, hopefully at the end of the week
