Hijet radio

Forum:

Hi, not sure if I'm in the correct area as it's the first time I've used this. I have a 1999 hijet van and need to know if anyone knows of a radio small enough to fit in the blank on the dash. Some one has mentioned a floor centre console but was told the are only available from main dealers for huge money. Any advice will be appreciated

Thanks marky mark

Hi Jet Radio

I would fit a small graphic eq in the small dash box. I am not 100% certain about the radio/centre console price but it was really the only easy place to fit a radio/cassette unit.

I have had a couple of Micro vans but not the Hi-jet and most can fit a standard DIN unit into, onto, or under the dashboard area.

You could always ask at a decent Car Hi-Fi installers as they will probably give you some better idea of what can be persuaded into the available space. There is a security box which might just fit on top of the dash and allow all the wiring to pass down to the doors etc.

I was looking at the optional parcel metal parcel shelf at the rear and then panelling it with plywood and carpet. Into the front face some 6" component speakers and a modest power fourway amp. The front doors are quite thin so you'd need to fit spacer rings if you are after serious door speakers although two way 100mm component speakers will probably fit without causing problems getting in and out.

I ran a 4 x 25w system with 9 band graphic in my Rascal which coupled with 200mm 3 way speakers in the rear quater panels was seriously loud in such a small space. Like driving around inside full ear headphones!

Unfortunately the current Daihatsu Extol is too uncomfortable for me to drive as there is not enough leg room in the cab for those of us over 5'5" tall so I will have to look elsewhere for a new home for a LOUD install. But the Extol is a very secure and confident drive and will suit many potential buyers perfectly

Good luck with your quest.

regards

Stu

Thanks for all the

Thanks for all the information. I've just bought a hi-jet (and I'm 6' 2"!) and can't stand the thought of having no music! A friend is sending me the stereo they've just taken out of their car and if I do anything 'special' to get it to work I'll post about it here!

Radio

Hi mate, ive recentley bought a hijet van 99-V reg, it had the lower floor console fitted but no radio in it. I bought a brilliant JVC radio cd player from Halfords for £47!!!! Bargain. It plugged straight into my wiring loom plugs which were already there in the van. I think most of these hijets were pre-wired with ariel and speakers as standard but the radio's were extra. Anyway, it was great not to have to mess about wiring it up. I did however change the door speakers for some 120w Pioneers again from Halfords for £20. Same size etc as the originals so just a case of gently pulling the door cards away at the corner (no need to remove completely)and change them over. A 5 miniute job and the connections were the same size also.

Ive never seen any hijet with a radio fitted to the small dash area below the heater. I have seen loads of the floor consoles on e-bay for about £10 so try there mate first. Plenty of hijet breakers on e-bay also who will have one to send you for pennies.

Hope you get your sounds sorted soon. Brendan.

Radio

Mine is an L-reg, and doesn't have speakers fitted as standard. The previous owner fitted speakers on brackets behind the seats, on the metal rails where the sides of the van meet the roof.

doh!

I just pulled off the wee blanking plate and the hole is only about 5cm deep, I'm not going to be able to get a stereo in there!

So now I have to find some sort of mounting kit (any ideas?) or cobble something together, which I'm sure will delight my wife!

poo

I'm really struggling with this now, someone gave me a stereo and I've grabbed a 'cradle' from Halfords but there's quite simply nowhere to put it. I've had a look for the centre consoles on ebay but the only person flogging them is 'currently away', which in my many years on ebay is a message I've never seen before!

Radio fit

Mate, the easiest option is for you to just get hold of a hijet floor mount box. There are loads on ebay via the breakers who will send you one. As for the speakers, i would also get a pair of door cards off the breaker with the speakers already in them or at least the holes ready so you dont have to mess about. The fit is dead easy as the wiring connectors are already there and you just simply plug it in and push the ariel in the back of the head unit and away you go.

If you get any probs then bell me via this means. We are talking pennies mate for the bits off a doner vehicle. Regards. Brendan.

I decided to get the local

I decided to get the local Daihatsu dealership to fit the console as they appear quite flimsy and I didn't want to trash it. It's fitted now and I'm really quite excited about fitting the stereo a friend has given us, I've even bought my wife (it's her van really) a wee iPod so she can carry around all her tunes!

HUGE thanks to you all!
