propshaft came off

Forum:

ive just had the worst experience of my driving life.

i was coming down the motorway at about 68/70 when the car vibrated i instantly thought prop shaft loose.

so i slowed down with the intention of pulling over i was in second lane but just as i got down to about 50/55 the rear prop came off it front mounting (pinion/flange?) it hit the floor and the back end went up in the air but luckly did not flip i managed to get into first lane and luckly had an experienced lorry behind who got out the way quick.scary!!!!

i had to take of the prop on the side of motorway after id dug it out of the verge.
it looks like two of the front bolts vibrated out it has then sheered off the two remain bolt holes.
ill have to use nylon bolts and lock washers next time i think.

its battered the exhaust and obviously the mount on the transfer box where it connects has only 2 bolts holes left in tact ,,are these easy to change and how much anyone know? .
im hoping thats it with the damage though .

To remove the drive flange:

To remove the drive flange: remove the 30mm nut in the centre and pull out. Clean a secondhand one and lubricate with oil, slide in through the oil seal carefully and replace the 30mm nut.

Refit the propshaft and instead of nyloc huts use a good threadlock compound, i prefer Loctite.

thanks mate

hopefully that is all the damage and does not sound to bad of a job yes ill be using locktite next time .

Prop bolts

Give me a ring, I have kept quite a few of these as spares when dismantling vehicles or fitting prop spacers.

The drive flange just slides

The drive flange just slides onto a splined shaft, nothing difficult, takes about 5minutes to change one.

1992 fourtrak
