Electrical cutting out

Forum:

What is causing my 'L' reg. sportrax Elxi to cut out. 2 months ago a single cut out which I was able to start by turning the ignition without stopping. On Sat. a breakdown which needed to be recovered. It's with a trusted mechanic who has run it today but it won't cut out long enough for him to trace the fault. Our local Daihatsu dealer 'Petch' has been helpful but has no real solution - has anyone else nad a fault like this or can offer any suggestions?

V.Poss ECU

I'd personally suspect the ECU. But check the coil & Low Tension leads, as something may be breaking down due to heat....Clean and reset everything. Pay particular attention to the HT from the coil to distributor.
Fuel evaporation/starvation should also be considered. Has your fuel filter also been changed, and does this occur when engine is hot or cold?

But first of all, considering the cheapness of these parts, I'd change the dis.cap, HT leads and rotor arm for good measure straight away. (But don't pay dealer prices. Go to 4x4 spares in Birmingham or similar.)
Keep us informed. Good luck.

electrical cutting out

thanks for prompt reply - bought it in April from my in -laws who had had no problems for 7 years and were sad to see it go. Had done about 7K a year, but I'm doing at least 1K a month. Had it fully serviced, new radiator, fuel pipes, MOT, wax oiled - the chassis is in excellent condition. Fuel supply is fine, but keeps losing spark. Its running on the garage forecourt but cut outs are too short for diagnostics. Will pass on your suggestions and spares supplier.

Lorna, It could be an intermi

Lorna, It could be an intermittant fault with the main engine fuse in the fuse box, or the main fuseable link connected to the battery. Check the fuse box cover for the location and correct amperage of the engine fuse, and change it anyhow. If it is just the engine faulting, this may be it. If everything faults, (lights, horn ect) then try the fuseable link. It could merely be a bit of grunge on the connection, or it could be the solder has dry jointed inside the terminal.
Good luck finding the fault
Cheers

electrical cutting out

We never did find the fault - the garage said drive until it cuts out for more than a few minutes then the fault will be tracable - so I drove away! I hardly dare write this but its gone like a bird ever since! Returning to your site I read that other people have had this problem and all the advice may be helpful in the future, although I'd rather not need it!! Thanks anyway - its good to know there's someone out there.

cutting out

this problem may be caused by overheating of the ignition module
the cutting out would become more and more frequent and last a little longer each time , the vehicle would restart at first immediatly then it would take a longer time to cool down before it would restart !
