Calliper slider bolt 'lubricant'

Forum:

This post follows on from 'YRV disc brakes'.

There is one completely suitable grease for treatment of calliper slider bolts and other greases range from completely wrong to marginally ok. 'Lubrication' is the least requirement.

For this purpose a grease must be -

- suitable for high temperature use, for obvious reasons.

- non-petroleum based, as these products cause rubber seals
to swell.

- waterproof, sticking to surfaces and repelling and
replacing water.

Only silicone grease satisfies these three criteria.

Rubber grease can be used, but is inferior to silicone grease in the application.

All other greases are not suitable.

Many car shops, garages and individuals recommend and use copper grease because it is 'high temperature', but it is petroleum based and is thus completely unsuitable. If you've used copper grease and got away with it, you're lucky, not right!

And finally, to keep us all really happy, silicone grease is extremely difficult to find!
