i ended up attacking the barrel with a drill, strong screw driver and large hammer... and fitted the barrel out of a scrapper... its a couple of years ago now but i think if you can get it to turn on one click theres a pin underneath that will then depress to allow the barrel to slide out, our broken one wouldnt turn so had to be attacked to get it out.
Thanks for these suggestions - still having no joy however I do have the ignition off the car. Is there any way I can dismantle it to get at the key I notice there is a circlip on the back but reluctant to remove in case it all falls apart
With my Hijet ive had this more than once, door and petrol cap, fine snipe nosed pliers or tweezers have worked but circlip removal was needed on one occasion fiddle to get it back on did drop it but luckily im ok working with small parts
Thanks for the replies.
This is what worked for me ..... I noticed a method on the net using a coping saw blade but these are too big for this key so I went to B&Q and bought REXON pinless ( flat end ) electric scroll saw blades 15tpi, .42mm wide. What worked is to push this down the lock and into the groove in the key, then twist it about half a turn which causes the reversed teeth to grip the key and then you can pull it out, it may take two or three goes to get it all the way out. Also it may help to file the end going in just a touch to make it easier to locate the groove.
Hopefully this link will show the saw blades which are about

Strong magnet.
Wire nosed pliers.
Tweezers.
A spot of superglue onto the loose bit and hope it contacts.
PS ........ if you goto Yahoo.co.uk and put 'removing broken ignition key' into the search bar, you get pages of advice etc.
