Unusual auto hubs

Forum:

I have these front auto hubs, I have not seen another truck with them:-

(Ignore how deepset they are - I have 32mm spacers on)

I have just got a set of manual hubs:-

Will they be a direct replacement for my unusual auto hubs?

you've got a sportrak

and looks like you've got fourtrak hubs there so in a word-no good, completely different vehicles.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Your "auto" hubs are not auto

Your "auto" hubs are not auto hubs at all. The are straight front hubs, with no unlocking facility at all. Similar to the old series Landrovers, your front axle, diff, and propshaft are turning all the time.

The second pic shows standard Sportrak wheels, and I think thats where the assumption that they wont fit comes in, assuming you have a Fourtrak. Of course, it could just be Sportrak wheels on a Fourtrak.

Will they fit? I am not sure about the spline count on the front axles of a Sportrak, if in fact they are Sportrak hubs, but that will be the only difference. The Aisin hubs are the standard front freewheeling hubs on Fourtraks, and the job is virtually a straightforward swap. When you acquire the freewheeling hubs, make sure you get the circlip off the inner axle. It should take all of about 15 minutes a side to change, assuming everything in the new hubs is not contaminated with water, mud, crap ect.

All views and advice offered are my own, from my ow

they are both sportraks I

they are both sportraks I own, the unusual one is my black and silver one

The suspension brakes ball joints calipers etc etc are all Sportrak, and the same as the other 2 I own. The only difference is the hubs.
I can simply change the cast metal frame that the hub and bearings all fit to, but would prefer just to change the hub.
I'm not sure I understand your first paragraph, as they unlock when i reverse, same as regular auto hubs. The prop etc all works same as regular auto hubs like this:-

This is my third sportrak! Smile

so if I am understanding this

so if I am understanding this right, the standard auto hubs allow the front diff and prop to stop rotating until 4wd is required via the transfer box.

The manual hubs do the same, but have to have their collars rotated by hand.

My unusual hubs do neither, the front diff and prop rotate all the time and 4wd is supplied via the transfer case as normal.
Thus my hubs are essentially just drive shaft end covers. There is clearly nothing to go wrong and therfore they will be very reliable.
So - is it worth changing them for the manual hubs, as i dont do many miles and the truck is mainly for off-roading?

Yours have been fitted with

Yours have been fitted with older Toyota drive flanges, so are driving the front axle all the time.

If you are happy with them then leave them, you will lose some fuel economy and the front axle will wear quicker. Ensure you replace the axle oils regularly and only use GL5 rated lubricants.

Ok thanks for that. Will

Ok thanks for that. Will leave them as they are certainly problem free and I don't have to worry about them going wrong!
