....And also, Sportrak engine cuts out randomly...

Forum:

...not just when cold, but odd times, usually with foot off accelerator when braking to stop (clutch in, naturally!).

I wonder if it might be a fuel filter blockage? If so, where is the filter, and is it washable? Having just been off-roading, I wonder if it's shaken up the sludge in the tank & some dirt has sneaked down the fuel pipe? Or, is it more likely to be a fuel injection problem at the main butterfly area? (Can't remember what that chamber's called).

Getting worse, whatever it is - cut out as I stopped before passing a stationary truck today, wouldn't restart for a few seconds, then ran as if nothing had happened, only to cut out again six miles later when entering a roundabout(I bump-started it that time, using the momentum to keep going, though it coughed a bit).

Any clues, folks? All advice appreciated...

Fuel cap.

Next time it stops remove the fuel cap. If it starts and runs with no further stoppage, you have the problem. Either buy a new fuel cap or drill a 1/16th hole in the existing cap to prevent the vacuum forming.

Hmmm....

Used to get that vacuum problem on bike tanks, but never had it on a car. Mind you, it does figure - it gives a mighty hiss when the cap is released! Again, I should have thought of that one, but I'm knackered & getting forgetful in my 'old' age Smile ....

Thanks again, Mace; as always, it's the silly, simple things that can trip us up, eh?....

Fuel cap

Sporty does 'hiss' when the cap is removed but the tank also needs to breathe. I found Sporty runs OK even with the cap is drilled.

Drilled!

Tried to blow through the hole to see if it was blocked - all I got was a foul taste and blown eardrums! Smile

Drilled it out - easy breathing; wonderful!

Thanks again, Mace...

Did it fix it ?

Post the result ......... drill should do it if it is suffering a vacuum.
