10 Years of faithful service

Forum:

Hi
Dont often need to post on here but after ten years of faithful service my daihatsu 2.8 NAD equipped series III died last night on my way back from North Yorkshire

Symptons
The engine would be running along fine then suddenly complete loss of power. Pressing the accelerator would produce nothing - seems lack fuel although i had 1/2 tank. This happened at sporadic times. If i took my foot off the accelerator the engine would keeping going at idle
All the electrics working fine (although my voltage regulator is a bit iffy). Up until complete failure the engine would always fire back into life and i could continue on my way until the next coughing and spluttering sequence. what did seem to upset it was uphill gradients - although that could be pure coincident.

I got 3/4 of the way home and then it had another coughing and spluttering moment from which it never recovered - called breakdown recovery at 12:30am and got home by 2:30am

Prognosis
On the way down to North Yorkshire I ran the fuel a little lower than normal (exhibiting same symptons - not so severe at this point) but filled up and it didnt repeat the problem until nearing my destination. I feel the issue is debris blocking the fuel lines somewhere but there seems to be plenty of fuel in the system when pressing the fuel filter pump on the bulkhead.

I havent had a chance to don the overalls and probe deeper due to other family committments (illnesses) but just needed your opinions on what it could be before going further

Many thanks

Andrew

Could be many things: Check

Could be many things:

Check or replace the fuel filter, then examine the fuel lines fully for leaks or signs of sucking in air. Check the fuel tank pick up filter in the fuel tank on the end of the fuel pick up pipe, and the pick up pipe for perforations. Check the tank for debris or water, water will form on the bottom of the tank from years of condensation.

Fuel Pump:

Possible intermittent fault on the fuel shut off valve which will occasionally close it and slow or stop the engine. Check the wiring to the fuel pump for corrosion or breaks. Check the ignition switch is fine as this will cause a sudden loss of electrical power and stop the vehicle.
Check the pump for output as there could be a number of internal issues from wear or mechanical failure.

Check the fuel tank breather valve, this is basically a ball centralised between two springs. As fuel expands it forces it one way, as it is used it goes the other way to maintain the fuel tank from pressurising/depressurising. These are prone to blocking from dirt or seizing.

sorted it was the fuel

sorted it was the fuel solenoid cut off voltage supply.

Cheers for your help
