2003 Charade Engine warning light

Forum:

Hi.

I've got a 2003 Charade with the engine warning light on. It's lumpy at low speeds and a bit smokey but is pretty good once you get going.

Can I have some suggestions please as to where to look for the problem? Is it a sensor?

Thanks, Rob.

What colour's the smoke?

Could be many things, a sensor causing smoking or vice-verca. If it's blue smoke it's oil, black it's overfuelling, white it's water - head gasket possibly.
See what others on here come up with but I would get it plugged into a diagnostic machine as if the engine light's on there's likely to be a fault code present which could pin point the problem. Hope you get sorted.

Diagnostics

Thanks Wayne, not sure about the colour of the smoke, but it smelled fuely.

Do you have any idea what the format of the diagnostic interface is? Is it CAN?

On some cars it's possible to force the ECU into a diagnostic mode where dashboard lights flash fault codes. Is that possible with the Charade?

Rob.

I think you'll find it is

I think you'll find it is OBDII, not 100%. As for shorting out the connnector (did this on my mk3 astra) I am not sure if this can be done on the Charade, someone else may be able to help you further with this. I know on the older charades with the 3 pin connector this could be done. Have you tried googling it? I have for you but nothing of any relevance came up. If it smells like fuel I suspect it's overfuelling or something and the smoke is blackish as opposed to blueish in colour.

I also have the MIL light on

I also have the MIL light on in my 2004 Charade. Does anyone know where the OBD computer port is located?
