YRV Turbo Drivebelt and ATF Fluid Change

Forum:

Yes, this old chestnut again.........

Been getting a rattle from belt area for a while now mainly when engine is warm. The other morning whilst idling from cold a whistling noise appeared from the belt area. It comes and goes and is there regardless of the belts tension.
I have since removed the belt and inspected the tensioner. There is slight play in the tensioner and I noticed the belt is cracking VERY SLIGHTLY, but I also noticed the belt has been rubbing on the side of engine where the tensioner is. I sprayed some water onto the the belt near the pas pump and the whistly/screech appeared then went so I wonder id the wetness caused the noise. I have refitted the belt, applied some grease to the tensioner and at the last glance the belt was not rubbing on the engine. Can't think why the belt moved across, even the small amount of play in the tensioner wouldn't cause this. Any thoughts people?
By the way after reading other posts regarding noises I have removed the dvvt filter which was spotless, took me a while to find it Smile

Dealer wants

drive belt

Dont change the tensioner just get a 4pk 1720 belt from any car parts sup this will then cure the rattle as long as its tensioned correctly.DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN,IT WILL cause other problems. As for the a/t/f oil just drain and refil, the gearbox drain plug is on the gearbox sump.Put the old oil in a clear measure and what you take out you put back in new oil, then check on dipstick, when selected all gears at from park to d2,and the back to park.As long as the level was correct in the first place you should'nt have any problems.Hope this helps Mick49

Cheers, was concerned about

Cheers, was concerned about the play in the tensioner mainly. Couldn't figure out how to remove it without removing the 14mm nut, it slid back and forth ok and i noticed a wider part of the groove it slides along on its bracket (towards front of ccar) that I thought it might come out of. Will defo get a new belt in any case. As for ATF I will do as you said, but is there a filter in the Box that needs replacing?

Hi Wayne. For the ATF I just got it done whilst my car was in for a service, so not sure what they did when transferring the oil.
As for the tensioner I'd give Daihatsu-Dave a shout as he has done his recently and should be able to advise on what's best. Apparrently it took him 4 hours to do though Sad

Jon.

Cheers Jon, will give him a shout. I think I could do it in under an hour as I've practically had the tensioner off along with the belt. Smile (I have skinny hands and arms though Wink

about to change my auto fluid

about to change my auto fluid to,sounds pretty straight forward to do,but may take to dealer as could be expensive job if you cock it up...Oh what to do!!!.

DIY!! Book says 1.8 litres

DIY!! Book says 1.8 litres is drainable so I reckon drain out into a container and measure what comes out and then put same amount back in fresh. Can't go wrong really. Would need to do this loads of times though to change a decent amount of the fluid. If you take it to dealer make sure they get most of it out (95% is possible I've heard) Only thing is there might be a screen/filter in the box to change; I've heard some jap boxes don't have one. Might ring stealer to find out and will let you know. Let us know what you do Wink

Drivebelt Tensioner

Well I have removed the tensioner from the car and found there is definitely a small amount of play in the bearings. It sounded a little dry too so I have pushed some bearing grease into the bearings and have since refitted it and so far it has been nice and quiet. A new tensioner and belt will be fitted when I get some cash (!) but for now I think it has done the trick. I tried running the belt loose and tight just to see if the noise was coming from somewhere else too, and touchwood all is well. Reckon I could fit new belt and tensioner in record time now the amount of times I've messed with it............:-)

I panicked yesterday. I drove 8 miles and looked under the bonnet to check the belt and saw a tiny bit of steam coming from the radiator. There was water around the cap, but I remembered I split some water the previous day and I had washed the car too so I'm hoping its just that..............
When I got home the car was very hot and I didn't see any steam so my fingers are tightly crossed. Cray 2

Interesting about the belt.

After a recent visit to see Daihatsu Dave and doing some comparisons, it appears the YRV can use a variety of belts. As an example the new Belt on my Turbo is a 1750 where as the one Davae has done is a 1720/1722. I believe it depnds on how easy a job you want to put the belt on. Smile

Hmmm, that is interesting

Hmmm, that is interesting Jon. After I had greased the tensioner it was fine until I went out in the rain last night. It sounded like the alternator, and the belt was squeaking in time as it appeared to be touching the edge of the alternator pulley as it squeaked as if the belt wasn't running straight. I squirted a tiny amount of water on the belt by the pas pump away from the alternator and the squeak stopped so I may get away with just a belt................

I've just bought a new

I've just bought a new tensioner pulley and even the new one has some slight side to side play in the bearing.
Still looking at modding a standard bearing to fit the tensioner now i've got a spare to mess with Smile

To add to the "Which belt mystery" -
My 04 car had a 1715 Daihatsu branded belt which i replaced with a Gates brand 1720 having struggled with the genuine 1705 belt i had. My scrap 03 has a 1705 belt....original Daihatsu branded too.

Still think a 1705 will fit but 2 pairs of hands needed to hold the belt tight around the various pulleys.

I'm getting the impression the belt length has changed over time as each Dealership Techie has struggled to fit and complained.

Wayne how did you grease the bearing cos the seal cover once removed wont go back and leaks?

More Belt mystery

Ha ha being honest i had to pop outside and double check....4pk17whatever Biggrin

Bob's has an original 1755 which is what i first sourced for mine but took it back for a 1720 once i saw mine was a 1715.

Been back to get this belt(1755) for Bob and they claim they dont have one on the system.
Told them i think they just swapped it and put it on the rack without logging it.
Ten mins of searching and still empty handed.
Reckon they have not sold it or it would be on "the system"....that word makes me mad!
So wheres the effin belt then??????
Maybe the "Serpentine" belt has slithered under the rack!!

Nightmare!! Dave, to be

Nightmare!!

Dave, to be honest I removed the tensioner and there appeared to be a gap between the pulley and the middle part and I pushed grease into this gap thinking the bearings were there!! Maybe the reason it quietened up after I refitted it is because the belt was tensioned differently..............as I said the damn thing is squeaking now when I rev it and quietens up at constant rpm, don't want to tighten it any more to be honest. At 25k I'm certain mine is the original belt. I'm just going to get a belt and see what happens. Will be doing oil and filter, air filter and plugs too. Plugs not been done for a while, although mileage wise they are fine.
