Forum:
Hi I have owned my beloved Fourtrak from new in 1995 but it is being threatened with retirement by my other half as we are starting to get niggly problems.
The current hassle is when you put full beam on it only works intermittantly & at other times it drops the lights down to just side lights, so you never quite know what you are going to get. It works fine on dipped lights. I have had it checked first person could not make it go wrong & said I must be flicking the wrong switch (hmm after 15 years?) & 2nd person said it was a relay which is on a PCB tha apparently costs
i bet nothing too serious
the lighting issue is most likely going to b the stalk behind the steering wheel, probably just needs a dam good clean with an air line and some sirt of spray cleaner for electrics, do not use products like choke n carb cleaner, it melts plastics, as for 4wd i bet its a sticky solonoid on the transfer box as long as your gearbox selector has 2h, 4L written on it and a push button for 4h on the dash, if its not that then auto hub needs cleaning n greasing on the front wheels.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

i had a simmiler problem 0n my independent lights kept blowing and intermitenly going off whilst driving i found that the electrics going to the tow bar had rubed onto the body causeing a short maybe its worth having a look

In addition it could be a poor earth or the headlight dim dip resistor if it has one fitted.
You are being ripped off,
You are being ripped off, there are no circuit boards associated with the headlights, or any other part of the vehicle except the wiper park mechanism or electric windows if fitted.
Try a good local auto electrician as it is likely to be one of a few possible faults.
Poor earth or live connection due to old age and this corroding the wires at their connection points.
Headlight switch needing a good clean.
Corroded bulb holders.
Dim dip relay, which is simply a resistor and a few pence, assuming yours is one of the very small number fitted with them.
No circuit boards.
assassin is spot on.
IMHO most likely a poor earth connection. The vibration is giving the connection and disconnection.
Dark nights & dodgy lights
Hi - Thanks so much for your helpful feedback! I still haven't managed to sort the problem but have given the connections on the stalk a good clean. At least I didn't cough up for something I didn't need & will try to find a specialist as suggested.
I am delighted to hear that there is hope for the 4wd, I always felt it was not a major problem. My Fourtrak does not have a button on the dash to go into 4wd but you have to disengage then reverse to take it out. It was working fine in the snow last year but then when I went to use it again the green dash light came on but nothing happened. The trouble is now that the car has not got any great value (except to me)it becomes harder to justify the escalating cost of repairs. At least I now know where I can ask for knowledgable advice. Many thanks!
