replacing early F50 2.5 with later 2.8 turbo

Forum:

Hi

I have an early landrover with an early fourtrax ( or earlier ! ) 2.5 litre engine .Its a lovely engine much better than the standard landrover offering of the time
But it is old and smoking a lot on start up .

My question is could I directly replace this with a later 2.8 turbo Unknw

That is is the bell housing clutch side the same, I don't mind so much if the brackets aren't exactly the same as I can improvise that.

Regards

Paul

It is basicly the same block.

It is basicly the same block. The only things you should need to mod is the exhoust down pipe, an electronic ignition instead of the mechanical pump operation on the 2.5 (has yours got the servo with a bar opperating the pump, or just a cabl / bar into the cab for manual opperatio as many were modified to) and fuel line as the lift pump is diffrent. You will need a later aultinator/vacum pump assembly as the one from the 2.5 will not physically fit in the gap left by the Terbo and its manifold. You will also want to bolt the 2.5 engine mounts to the 2.8 block, as they stand at a diffrent hight, but the block is the same. Think that's it from memory? Basicly though it is a very straight forward job. Make sure you put the Terbo 2.8 in though. If you find a nice cheap nonterbo 2.8 DO NOT use it. They are a reat let down from the 2.5, that's why the Terbo was added I think.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
