whats on top
dampers come with a variety of locking devices on top to hold the rod to stop it from spinning so the one or two nuts undo, most likely on the top in the centre of the nut you will see a hex fitting hole, allen key job, or cut the nut, doesnt take too much to get a damper off.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

as you are going to junk them
as you are going to junk them anyway just grip them with Stilsons or similar to stop the damper barrel rotating.
maybe even a chain wrench?
cheers
