Insurance and mods

Forum:

I've owned a very reliable T plate 4Trak for about six years now. One of the first things I did with it was remove a huge set of bull bars from the front. They made it look nose-heavy - and we don't get many bulls around where I live! Since then my insurers have recoiled in horror at my requests to fit a set of spot/driving lamps and /or an A-bar. They waffle about these changes stop it being 'original'. How is it then that there are quite a few very nice 4Traks about that have either or both? Have people found a sympathetic insurer or are they just keeping quiet about what they have done?

There are many problems with modifications and insurance companies as it is their get out of paying card.
What i suggest is that anyone checks what was original or optional equipment from new. If it was an original fitment or an optional fitment their should be no problems with aftermarket items.

One good one is to play the stupidity card, and claim "it was on the vehicle when i bought it", it works wonders.

Where any mechanical or structural modifications are undertaken, a word with your insurers will be beneficial. Get everything in writing, and with a name and signature, and save them.
If you are friendly with your local MOT inspector a simple engineers report from them about the quality of any modifications or conversions could be extremely beneficial.
