4Trak smelling bad after running in snow

Forum:

Hi all

Took our 98 TDX out to get some food today, it's just been serviced, never let us down, but had to drive in 4L for about 8 miles and 4H for about 6 miles (in 4 inches or more of snow), on getting home it smelt like it was overheating or about to catch fire, no oil or liquids escaping, all instruments showed OK, no brakes hot to touch front or back, nothing I could see was wrong. Have not had to use it much in four wheel drive - which seems to work OK.
Is this normal or am I just being paranoid?
I am disabled so will have to rely on this car for the winter here in Scotland.
Thanks in adance for any thoughts you might have.

Hi. The only thing that

Hi.

The only thing that springs to my mind is the front diff. It could be that because 4wd isn't used much, something has contaminated the oil(or its just really old) and is not doing its job properly and getting hot. Might be worth getting it changed or at least checked. I would do the rear diff also.

I'm sure someone else will be on to offer some more suggestions.

yer i wonder iff

pehaps the diff or gearbox oils got hot as gear oil smells.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

If it is not regularly run in

If it is not regularly run in 4WD the axle becomes comtaminated with moisture from air entering through the axle breathers. As the contaminated oil heats up it displaces the water through the heat generated from continual usage. This also removes a number of other contaminents, oil residue, and a number of other things as it evaporates which gives this distinctive smell.

If all the fluids are fine, and the temperatures are remaining within their normal limits it is fine.

Also remember that other hot items displace moisture, hot brakes, exhausts running in snow, or being blasted with snow. This will steam off and create more unusual smells.
