New member, old questions.

Forum:

Hi, I've just got my first Fourtrak (97 TDX on 127k miles) after years of Land rovers and Hiluxs(i?) & so far I'm well impressed with the road manners and fuel economy but as always with an old car bought in the dark after a 2 minute test drive there are a view niggles y'all might be able to help with;

1) When I go over a sharp bump or stop quickly the check brakes, battery and water in diesel warning lights all spark up then go out after a few minutes, I'm assuming this is an electrical fault, is there anything that commonly wears loose & could cause this?

2) The wheels have locking wheel nuts (different on the spare) & I don't seem to have either key, any ideas?

3) The gearbox seems to whine a lot under power & lift off, the change is nice & smooth & there's no grinding but it is loud in all gears, probably the loudest in-cab noise between 25 & 50 mph. Are they just pretty noisy? Silly question really given none of you can hear how loud it is! In the service history I can see it had a new back axle at 90k so maybe it's done a lot of towing.

4) Despite being a TDX it has had the rear seats removed, anything to look for in finding a new rear bench? I had a look at some past posts and can see I need lwb but it doesn't really matter if they come from a leafer or an indie?

Thanks, Bran, Powys.

the dash lights sometimes

the dash lights sometimes play up when the fan belt is loose.... no idea why

i would think about checking the gearbox oil level if its noisy.... but be careful theres a bolt on the side that looks like a level plug but if you undo it something falls off inside and its a box out job to put it back together..try a search on here... or wait for someone to post the details

as far as iknow the rear seats are the same.

the locking wheel nuts ...

the locking wheel nuts ... its usually find a socket that fill fit when persuaded with a large hammer. or hammer and chisel

wheel nuts

we have special locking wheel nut removal sockets-normally not to much trouble, try a local garage to see if they can help! as i shouldnt think you are near here!

Thanks for the replies, I

Thanks for the replies, I suppose if the fan belt is loose & the charge varies from the alternator that might explain the warning lights coming on, I'll check tomorrow. The wheel nuts are completely round with a key slit in the middle, I guess I'll try a Daihatsu dealer or file some edges on.

Rear seats are the same

Rear seats are the same across leaf sprung and Indipendent, except the earlier modles have one loop bolted to the floor to clip the rear of the seat to the floor. The later ones have an ancer point on each wheel arch, leaving the floor clear of lumps when the seat is folded up. The earlier ancor point can be boled into a latter jeep (as I did when converting a van). Just remember to get the ancor as well if you bye an earlier seat.
Does the transmition apear to make any noise when the engine is running and the car in nutral? If so does the noise go away if you dip the clutch. Only ask as Fourtraks often suffer from dry thrust barings. Prbably if your noise is a whine though an oils change, maybe with an aditive, would prob be first port of call.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Good thinking on the thrust

Good thinking on the thrust bearing but there's no noise at idle, in fact at the moment we're so snowed in I have to drive the first 4 miles in 1st gear 4H at 10 mph & there's no noise at all, it's only when I'm up to about 20mph out on the cleared road & in 2H that it starts whining, def. from the gearbox & equal in all gears, maybe the layshaft? I'll try a fluids change when the snow melts enough that I can actually get under the truck!

With the seats I think I already have all the seat belt mountings because the roll bar is still there, just no seats or belts. Thanks for your help.
