fitting bull bars

Forum:

hello
I'm thinking about getting bull bars fitted, but ive checked under my sportrak and can't make out where they would bolt onto. The most likey looking place is about 14 inches from the front grill underneath the car (they keep the protector in place). But the bolts are too worn and rusty to remove. Anybody got any Ideas? Thanks a lot

Where they fit.

It doesn't sound like that is the right place to bolt the bullbar on. It is hard to describe where it bolts onto but becomes very obvious once you get the bullbar. There are screw holes underneath the car on the main frame (not sure if this has a proper name) either side of the slip plate. It also has a small piece of metal sticking out so that the bullbar lines up nicely. You then just bolt it on. You should get the bolts with the bar. You also then bolt the bullbar to the top of tbe bumper. There are 2 plastic caps you push out to do this.

Hope this is clear enough for you to understand!

A lesson to be learnt

Thanks a lot for that Lurch, load of my mind, I checked under the cat and all seemed well. So off i went and bought one from www.4x4accessoriesandtyres.com it arrived next day! whoopy Couldn't wait to fit it. BUT then i started to remove the bolts under the bumper... and disaster... the bolt head sheared off!! and I was left with no where to screw the new bolt. I phoned 4x4accessoriesandtyres and they would charge me £30 re-pack fee to send it back Evil plus £13 P&P. I guess I'm better off trying to sell it here. rand new bull bar anybody Crying

the moral

so the moral to this story is
Make sure you can remove the bolt BEFORE you buy your bull bars or side steps

Fitting bull bars

Are you trying to remove old ones or just fit new ones?? Ive just looked under my car (no bullbar fitted), and the two brackets which i assume are for a bull bar (each with two threaded holes in) have no bolts in. Looks like you just bolt the new ones on?

Cant you get the bolt drilled out and then find a new bold to fit?? Seems a shame to just scrap the idea!

Nat

Hi Nat

It a big shame to scrap the idea I'M HEART BROKEN
My local garage told me it would be a 3hr job to drill the old bolt out. Cost = £100. way too much for me.
OH yes and those two brackets you mentioned. They are what I thought the BBar would bolt onto, There are not, well, not with the one I bought. The one I bought, bolts face on. and uses the same bolt holes as the slip plate. Maybe other BBars excist that would fit?? HEEEEELP!!!!!!

Try another garage

3 hours and £100 to drill out a bolt seems like a MAJOR rip-off. I would try someone else before you give in. Or but yourself a nice sharp drill and a stud remover.

It is them brackets

The brackets are what you bolt the bullbar onto. My bullbar bolted on fine. They may have sent you the wrong bar if it wouldn't fit on them. Which means they would pay for it to be returned.

Happy ending

Cheers Lurch
I guess there must be more than one way to fit bull bars onto a sporty. I know the way you are talking about cos I checked under a parked sportrak and its Bar had a very different fitting to the bull bar I was sent. Your type of fitting seems to make much more sense cos you end up with 6 bolts holding it on, I only get 4, 2 on the bumper and 2 on the chasis.
Anyway all is well, cos after taking advice from this site I set about doing the drilling myself, Surpringly easy, I drilled one 2mm hole in the middle and 2 either side, joined the holes together and the old bolt fell out leaving most of the thread intact! And its as solid as a rock. So big thanks to all on this site.

Bolts

Congratulations in getting it to go on. I was worried about mine as I only have 4 bolts holding mine on. 2 underneath and 2 on the bumper because the drill holes in my A-bar i not think are quite aligned right. Or it needs beating into place with a hammer. But is rock solid with just the 4 bolts so won't worry too much.

The bolts, screws, etc seem to be hell with Sportraks. I can never undo any of them!!! Especially the ones for the lights. As need to replace a couple of bulbs and can I undo 1 of the screws on each bulb glass? One undoes fine and the other won't budge!
