v v v v v vibrations....!

Forum:

Heres a puzzler for you experts..
I had a UJ replaced last week (93 K reg track). The garage that did the job had the yoke machined out to get a UJ to fit the rear prop.Anyway got up the road from the garage and hit 60mph, BIG vibration and then...BANG..YIKES. ShokShok .the prop flew off! The yoke that had been machined out had SNAPPED on one of the UJ sleeves. Back to the garage in 4WD running on the front prop...new rear prop required. New rear prop fitted from Milners at the garage but Ive now got the vibrations BIG TIME...especially when accelerating. Thought one of the flanges may have been bent slightly on either the transfer box or the rear diff, from when the prop came off, but they seem ok when I put the motor on the ramp.Any ideas as it seems highly unlikely that a brand new prop would be unbalanced...:? Scratch one-s head :puzzled:I and the garage mechanics are baffled (not that it takes much to baffle me!)Took the new prop off and the vibrations gone again when running on the front prop. Any ideas out there as to the cause?

God knows why the garage had

God knows why the garage had to machine out the prop to fit a UJ in the first place...It was obviously not the correct size of UJ they were fitting...Millners sell the correct UJ's for £15...anyway..whats done can't be undone now....just because the prop is new does not mean its balanced to your car. The runout should have been checked after the prop had been fitted.

The vibration is almost certainly due to the prop being unbalanced...if you can't get the runout checked yourself take it to any reputable 4x4 dealership and get em to check it for you and balance the prop...should not be too expensive...a lot less than knackered box and diff if you dont get it sorted.

hope this helps

runout??????? can you please

runout??????? can you please explain cos I aint mechanically knowledgeable!!! The previous prop fitted was from a LAND ROVER-it had round flanges as opoesed to the daihatsu square one. Cheers matey

Ah so previous prop was not t

Ah so previous prop was not the species Daihatsu...that explains the UJ not fitting...beg to ask why the garage did not fit a rand lover UJ?

I will try to explain runout m8...As the length of the prop spins to drive the wheels via diff and drive shafts it must be as straight as possible...if it is not balanced properly it will 'wobble' along its length..dunno how else to put it..this will cause vibration. It only has to be off centre a little to cause this vibration to occur. That is why weights are fitted to the prop to counter act this 'wobble'

The deflection away from 'perfectly straight' as the prop spins can be measured using a special calibration tool that has a gauge..this can accurately measure where the deflection is occuring and weights can be attached to the prop to 'balance ' it.

They do a similar thing when new tyres are fitted...they spin the wheel in a machine and measure the 'runout' ie deflection away from perfectly straight spinning ..add weights to counter act the unbalanced wheel.

Does this make sense to you m8 Unknw

Certainly makes sense fella-e

Certainly makes sense fella-even a chimp like me can understand that explanation! Anyways the garage is exchanging the prop next week for a new un' to see if that cures the problem....I dont think they know there arse from their elbow to be honest mate! They did put the motor up on the ramp with the prop running, and didnt see any vibration-but they certainly didnt use a special tool to measure the runout!
I will let you know how "episode II, return of the prop" pans out. Cheers for your ideas matey. Am thinking maybe it could be a knackered bearing somewhere in the diff.

Or the rear of the transfer c

Or the rear of the transfer case. If either of those bearings (transfer or diff) has some movement, no amount of prop shaft balancing will stop the vibration.
Personally, I would change mechanic, they sould like a bunch of wallies to me.

Any ideas on how to identify

Any ideas on how to identify if it is the transfer or rear diff bearing? Gave each of the attached flanges a good yank and there doesnt seem to be any play...

Is there any up and down move

Is there any up and down movement in either flange? There should be none.

Nope, see what the different

Nope, see what the different prop shaft does. If the vibe dissapears when the shaft is removed, then commonsense says thats it. I suppose it could be something in the rear axle, bent inner axle, or out of balance or out of true rear wheel. But these should still show up even without the rear shaft.

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHH

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH.........still got the same problem, whats the odds of 2 props unbalanced in a row? Checked the diff and transfer box....no issues there. BAFFLED.

Can anyone point me in the di

Can anyone point me in the direction of a transmission/drivetrain/propshaft specialist in the Midlands....or maybe even a good Daihatsu mechanic!

for info...took two props to

for info...took two props to a specialist... both the props I had from Milner were BENT along the tube section. Both had runout of about 3/4 inch along their length, hence the vibrations!

Get straight back onto Millne

Get straight back onto Millners and demand your money back m8. Thats outragous..Millners are a good company normally and any dealings I have had with them have been ok. Having said that I am pretty certain that the props they sell are reconditioned and should therefore be checked for runout etc.I mean we arn't talking a couple of quid for a drive belt here...get back onto them and if you are able to vist them take the results of your tests with you or post copies (not the originals) to them.

Agree totally mate. The props

Agree totally mate. The props are brand NEW and not even reconditioned units. Ive paid the specialist prop place locally £50 - they say they can "fix" the prop by cutting it and replacing the crap section. To be honest I aint even paid for the props-the garage that fixed (bodged) my UJ in the first place footed the bill-i just want my motor sorted, its taken a month to get this far-£50 seems cheaper than the hassle of waiting another week for a part etc. As regards the non daihatsu UJ the specialist said its common for garages to fit "dodgy" flanges and yokes in order to get cheaper landy parts fitted. I can recommend Dave Mac props Coventry wholehartedly if youve got any transmission issues-an honest, cheap service.
