new owner - help

Forum:

I've recently bought a 94 sportrak, and I'm looking forward to the fun of it. There's a few 'glitches'. however, that I need to sort out, can anyone help?
When on full lock steering to the right, I get a horrible crunch on the l/h/s front wheel.
When at very low speed, there's a 'squeak' in the steering column.
Second gear seems a bit 'clunky'.
Is there any way of getting the back off faster? wing nuts?
The indicator on the rear l/h/s bumper doesn't work (but the other lights on this set seem ok.
The radio connection wires seem to have been 'played with' - there's a loop that comes out in here and goes straight back in! what is this?
Oh, and the cigarette lighter doesn't work! (I've checked the fuses and they seem ok).

I've seen some of your site and hope that there's someone out there that can help with answers to some of these problems (at least the cigarette lighter please!)

1. Crunching noise is the wheelbearing. Cheap enough, do the R/H side
at the same time to save further grief in the near future.

2. Squeak - Unknw Poss bushing in column somewhere.

3. Clunky change - maybe the cones are going - But unless you want the fag of a gearbox strip (NOT FUNNY ON ANY CAR, BELIEVE ME)I'd leave well alone. It'll probably still go forever as long as you make sure the 'box oil is topped up, Slick50 for gears will also hide a multitude of sins.

4 Lamp U/S....Try the bulb, and check the earths/wiring.

5. First, plug something like a phone charger in to see if power is there...It maybe just that the element has gone. Remember that Fag lighter wires have long been the lazy mans way to a 12v supply, so see if it has not been hijacked along the route. If you are a committed smoker like me, then just pull a 12 from the battery with a 10a fuse inline and wire up to the back of the unit.

Noise on full lock

There is a dome headed bolt which limits the amount of steering angle achieved and on full lock it touches the cross member. Clean off any dirt etc. and grease both parts. Do offside and nearside.

The radio

As the rest of your questions seemed to have been answered apart from the radio one. Firstly does the radio work? Wires that loop like that are usually for it to be connected to a mobile phone kit so it silences when you get a call, or for something else which I can't remember at the mo as the wiring loom I got for my Kenwood Stereo in my Sportrak has them.

Re: new owner - help

Hi, Ive recently bought a '95 Sportrak. I get a rubbing/deep squeeking type of noise from the stearing column too. Not sure what it is, but everything works ok so im leaving it alone!

My third gear can be a bit clunky, but again it works so i'll leave well alone for now. How can you check the oil in the gearbox to see how much is in there?? And how do u top it up if necessary??

And also, i get a clunk noise from the front axle (left hand side i think) if i drive off a curb or large bump (only sometimes tho) - not sure what it is... anyone got any ideas???

Regards,
Nat

The level/filler plug is on the nearside of the gearbox, and may be a swine to loosen if mine is anything to go by. It's 24mm, best go with a ring spanner.
Some hypoid oils come with a tube you screw to the top. if not, a suck 'n squirt with an old bicycle pump always does the trick.

new owner - help

Thanks for the advice everyone - looks like I've got a busy weekend ahead of me! at least it seems to be a vehicle that I can get into and do some work (or damage!)

PS anyone know a good (cheap) respray garage (the thing's turquoise - who thought that colour would look good?)

Turquoise

It's terrible when you think somebody actually chose that colour when they bought it new. Come the revolution such people will have a special place reserved against the wall

Pink??

Saw one on the M1 recently - looked shocking pink - when I got closer the logo on the spare wheel cover read ' It's not pink - it's cerise'

Someone knows what colour that is?

A word of warning on the clun

A word of warning on the clunk at full lock thing. Mine turned out to be nothing more than the stering stop sliping past it's bumper. Worth checking befor you start stripping things down.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Crunch from steering

I posted a similar problem to this a few moths back. Took the advice to get under the car and have a good look for grease nipples. I think there were three for each side on the suspension and one for each side on the steering links, plus also grease the lock stops. This solved the loud clunking noises coming from the front but I still have noise/movement in the steering column. The ciggy lighter has a small fusable link clipped onto the back of the socket replace burnt out link with wire solder.
