My fourtrack 1996 is loosing oil from the turbo. Is this a costly job. The garage is going to have a look to see if its the seal.. Is this a common fault?
and if it is the turbo which needs replacing any ideas for a cheap one???

The turbo had an oil feed
The turbo had an oil feed pipe, and a return pipe, so either could be leaking.
If the turbo is failing the cheaper option is to go to a reconditioner and obtain a service exchange unit.
thanks for the advise.
The turbio seems to be working fine no loss of power for example. how will i know if its failing????

Most of the time is is the
Most of the time is is the bearings which wear from abuse of previous owners.
When you start a turbo engine you should let it idle for one minute to build up pressure and flow to the turbo, then drive off.
When you stop you should let the engine idle for 30 seconds to 1 minute to allow the turbo to stop with its oil feed feeding it. They spin at around 100,000 RPM and many people switch off without idling for a minute, this causes a condition called heat soak. With the turbo spinning, and with no oil supply as the engine is switched off, the oil on the bearings boils. This boiling oil creates a situation called gumming, and is where a gum builds up on the bearings, and they are not correctly lubricated.
