Do a search on here for "D4 light"...............

This is an issue a few of us YRV Turbo owners suffer from. Mine does this all the time and I don't know why. A few on here say a new batttery is the fix, as if the battery voltage drops below say 9v or something, then the gearbox ECU goes mad. Even Daihatsu UK agree with this. On mine I just restart it and it's ok again. Seems to do it when it's damp mainly on mine. I have removed both gearbox sensors and cleaned them and cleaned all of the electrical connections including the battery terminals etc - but to no avail. I will get a new battery at some point to see if that's the problem. It didn't do it though during the cold spell we had which I find weird as the battery was under more strain in sub zero temps.
Like the turbo, steershift won't work and the car will not shift out of 1st gear. I don't know if my speedo stops working though, usually know it's gone mad before I set off, although I have noticed the number 3 flashes briefly in the display when putting it into D4. As far as I know no error codes are logged in the engine ECU either, so plugging a fault code reader in is probably a waste of time and money. There are more in depth Daihatsu readers that dealers use that tell you everything, but I don't know if they pick up any fault when the D4 light flashed or not.

So yes these faults you are experiencing are all related.

Is the car stuck in this mode? Or was it OK after a restart?

Ive put a code reader on it and it comes up vehicle speed sensor malfunction.....I then rang an auto trans specialist who said it more than likely would be the VSS and it would stop the speedo from working. It also puts the gearbox into limp mode which in turn leaves it in one gear and thus makes it violently bang into drive and reverse.
Ive no idea where too find the VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR so I can take a look at it??.....ANY PICS OR DIAGRAMS OR IDEAS WHERE IT IS ON THE TRANS / ENGINE WOULD BE GREAT. 07583625157

Yes this is a problem

I take it you have checked the Battery Voltage? Also worth having a look at the Auto-box oil on the dipstick located at the rear of the engine bay (Passenger side)for contamination (Should be a cherry red colour) as well as the level of the oil. Ideally as us Turbo owners have found out, the autobox fluid should be changed every 6 years as outlined in the users manual. I have come across a Daihatsu parts place/Servicing Garage that didn't want to change it and argued it was for the life of the car (right then!) I have now changed garages.

Oh and by the way... STOP SHOUTING! in your posts Wink

Hmmm that's very interesting.

Hmmm that's very interesting. Thanks for letting us know. Will have a look on mine to see if I can work out where the sensor is. Must be on the box near final drive somewhere. Next time mine flashes D4 will drive it and see if the speedo works. So is your car stuck in this mode?

Yes, its stuck in limp mode or "get you home" mode as some call it. I would try a second hand VSS (vehicle speed sensor) if someone would send me one.
My local dealer has took 2 days and still has not got back too me regarding a price / availibilty on the Sensor.
Ive checked all the wiring, the battery is charging perfect and not over charging and it starts on the key as normal.

Ironically mine D4 flashed

Ironically mine D4 flashed earlier, so as I said I would, I drove it but my speedo worked. I was rather naughty and accidently forgot to stop the engine before I restarted it and the starter went crunch but the D4 stopped flashing and all was well again, so it isn't restarting the engine that cures mine its obviously a "reboot" that does it.
So your's is stuck in limp mode? You must be really pleased. This why I HATE modern vehicles sometimes, you at the mercy of Dictating Manufacturers. At least years ago you could get cars going with a little knowledge.
I hope you get it sorted.
