Stainless silencers

Forum:

I've tried everything to stop the exhaust pipe on my YRV Premium from rusting through just forward of the rear silencer. Inspection today shows that doom is near.

So I want to get a stainless silencer manufactured and fitted. It will slip over and clamp onto the existing pipe just forward of the rear silencer. This pipe looks as good as new so I don't need or want a complete system.

I've asked for a quote from MIJ Exhaust in Walsall. Don't want to go any further north.

I know many of you have replaced your exhausts with stainless and have good feedback. Has anybody found a reliable company to the west of London?

If you attach stainless to

If you attach stainless to mild steel you get a situation called electrolytic reaction. This is where electrical current passing through metals causes the less noble (mild steel) to corrode excessively quickly.
This will give you the same situation with your exhaust, only it will rust next to where the stainless section attaches.

This leaves two choices:

One is to fit a full stainless exhaust system.

Two is to have flanges for the stainless section in stainless steel, and for the mild steel section in mild steel. These need to be at least 10mm thick, at this thickness it will take much longer for the mild steel flange to corrode.

Electrochemical reactions.

Thanks for your comments Assassin.

I know of the effect, but assume from experience that any degredation at the joint would be unnoticeably slow.

I had stainless steel silencers attached to mild steel pipes in the way that I propose, on my motorcycle and in many years there was no visible degredation. This combination is very common in motorcycle aftermarket silencers.

On a motorcycle there is less

On a motorcycle there is less effect due to much lower electrical flow, and thicker exhausts than cars.

On an average car the pipe may last as little as 6 months, this is why i suggested flanging. This will give it as much life as the exhaust, if not longer. It would be the cheapest option, particularly if you can weld yourself.

Ironically, been welding stainless exhaust first thing this morning.

Stainless exhaust quote

Still waiting for a price from The Stainless Works in Oxford. They are only 20 miles from me but I expect prices to be highish.

I have however received a quote from MIJ in Walsall....

£175 fitted, for stainless silencer to slip over mild steel pipe. They didn't mention the potential problem of electrochemical reaction.

£275 fitted, for cat-back stainless system.

How do these prices sound to you who have trod this path before me?

MIJ Exhaust

I had an exhaust put on my Fiat Stilo Abarth by MIJ and it rusted after 3 years... The boxes are stainless steel, but the pipes aren't!! The welds they did rust really bad!!!

make sure you keep the receipt, as they wont fix anything without it!!!

Helpful feedback

Thanks for that davipreece.

The MIJ website is very professional and they say all the right things to impress technically.

Bob F paid more for his system in Lincolnshire(?) and according to Bob is excellent quality. MIJ's lower price of £275 perhaps reflects lower quality, although they claim to use the best materials.

A good warning I think. Thanks again.
