Sportrak - flat spot

What sort of engine?

Is your Sportrak one with a carb engine of injection engine. Because from what I remember the carb engine is known for having a flatspot around that range. With the injection engine they fitted a black box in the centre of the engine which is meant to solve this flatspot which is does to some degree. Best thing is to check that the last owner didn't remove this and replace it with a piece of piping because this adds power and torque in mid to late rev range, but can cause the flatspot.

http://www.warfs.org/mods/blackbox.html has information about the blackbox and the flatspot. Though not directly related to what you are on about.

I am sure one of the more mechanical aware members will give other suggestions Smiling

Engine type

I've got an Anjou ('96 ELXi), so the engine is the injection model, therefore here's a couple of questions,

If the 'black box' breaks does the problem re-occur or does the engine just stop working?

What is the 'black box'?

Where is it?

Cheers for the Help Lurch!

The magical black box

The black box is smack bang in the centre of the engine on the top. You won't miss it. You may think it is the air filter at first. But that is the huge black cylinder to the right hand side. Which a good mod is to get rid of that and replace it with a K&N which is mentioned in the Sportrack section of the site Smiling

Not specifically know how the black box works, as it just has an air pipe going in and out and 2 smaller pipes. http://www.warfs.org/mods/img/BlackBox.jpg is a picture of the blackbox. I can't really see how the blackbox can break, but if it did break depending on what happened to it either of the 2 could occur.

This may not even be your actual problem. But a good idea to check you have one and to check that all pipes are on snuggly.
