Swapping a 1.6L gas engine with a diesel engine in a 1990 daihatsu rocky

Forum:

hey yall, this my first time on the forum. i live in the states, Mississippi to be precise. i just purchased rocky and I am really interested in changing the original 1.6L gasoline engine to a diesel engine. before i even think of getting into this project. is it really worth changing to diesel? of course I would look into bio-diesels. from reading the forums I see that people do have diesels in their daihatsus. Is there a diesel engine I can put in without to many mods? parts are also limited in the states

You may already be aware of

You may already be aware of this but the Daihatsu Rocky you get in the States is called the Sportrak in the UK and Feroza in the rest of the world. In addition the Rocky name in the rest of the world is used for the bigger diesel engined 4x4 that is called the Fourtrak in the UK. I don't think you get that vehicle at all in the US.

I don't recall seeing anyone having put a diesel into a car like yours, I suspect that it is more hassle than it is worth.

Also I might add that steve_m is right about the confusing name issues with these cars world wide.
Is it true that there is a 2L automatic version of the 'Rocky' / Sportrak in the states? If so, maybe the final gearing on this would be more ameanable to this particular conversion attempt? Personally I find my Sporti quite enough with the 1.6 in it. It will pull quite happily, due to the low gearing it can be quite sporty in a straight line and with off road tyres it goes round corners sideways very nicely. Basicly it is fun. Off road too. If you want a Diesel I sugest importing a Fourtrak. Don't think you'd be dissapointed if you did. Though parts might be an issue, as with all one off impoted vehicles.

Put 'Sportrak' , 'Diesel' and 'conversion' into the sight serch facility. I think you'll find a few other threads on this subject.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
