KYB

Forum:

Anyone use the Excel-G KYB shocks on Sirion 1.3/Rally?

Excel G's are made to be 15-20% firmer than the original OEM shocks,

The main reason they actually do this is to allow for wear in other parts of the cars suspension (that wont commonly get replaced like bushes)

Also of course if they are made a tad firmer they will feel new and a worthwhile purchase.

Monroe also do this with their top range shocks (normally firmer than standard), not had a look at the Tenneco catelogue yet to see if the Sirion is listed.

Not had them before but did pick up some one off AVO rear adjustable shocks:

Tony had them first then Dave and then I got them and fitted them to my YRV Turbo.

Seen KYB SPecial-R's in Japan. Same thing?

Im surprised AVO entertained

Im surprised AVO entertained a one off build! That's Good. They are often a bit awkward to deal with for special requests.

KYB are notorious for having the same product but with differnt name for differnet countries/regions, They even paint the shocks different colours sometimes.

It's hard to be sure though as some countries of course have better quality road surfaces than us (not hard!), so different firmness can be made sometimes for shocks sold in different countries.

Not a one-off build

I found AVO to be very helpful when I approached them for help with rear dampers for my YRV.

What they did for me was to go through their standard range of rebuildable adjustable dampers with me to select the nearest in physical dimensions - crucially, closed length, stroke and mountings, after which I bought them. £120 I think. Standard damper at standard price by mail order.

The special bit came after I tried to fit them, finding that the corners of the damper body interfered with the YRV's mounting points. I'm located about 50 miles from AVO's factory so took them back and they kindly chamfered the lower corners of the body foc. You can just about see the chamfer on jpor's picture.

After I'd fitted them, I found they were too harsh on their softest setting, so I took them off, took them back and they changed the fluid for a lighter grade. I think they charged me about £15 for that, based on part of their charge for damper rebuids. Very reasonable.

The AVOs didn't solve my problem so I sold them with very few miles on their clock.
