is it possible....yes, the problem is the na gearbox is slightly lower ratio which is ideal for larger tyre fitment on a turbod engine , i.e for me its ideal pottering round country roads, for people using bigger roads....youll be revving and going slower, the transfer boxes are all the same ratio, it all can be found in the manual, hope this helps.

I take it you are still talking about your 2.8 tdi fourtrak with the shot gearbox and you want to put an na one on?? as your question is topsy turvy otherwise, fit an na box to tdi and na, but only an na box to an na engine.

this is getting complicated! my fourtrak has a 2.8 non turbo engine, and the gearbox is goosed, i want to know if i can fit a gearbox from a 2.8 turbo diesle engined fourtrak?

ahh right yer your not following what I put then really, you want an na back mated with an na or youll have alot less power pulling away, to be honest if you get a chance buy a complete tdi with gearbox fitted, so much better.

ahh i though so, but i quite like my Normally aspirated little engine! im quite attached i think also it may use less fuel....?? just a guess, haha. its such a shame because the engine is as solid as it gets and the truck has not an ounce of rot on it either, for a 1992 motor its fabulouse... just a real shame about this gearbox malarchy! any more suggestions are much appreiciated!

not saying you cant connect a turbo gearbox to an Na engine but it will be slow and heavy to pull away (kind off) but crackin mpg in 5th gear at low revs at 50 mph

are you thinking.....for the 4wd? only if the transfer box is vacuum operated but dont use that transfer use the full manual one...i think thats what you mean by switch?? elaborate

yes this is what i meant, weve actually found a gearbox and transfer box now and its all manual, its a little different to mine as it has four low and two high, mine has four high, four low and two high, this doesnt matter though i dont think as it has five gears anyway...???

yes it does matter, as your vehicle does not have the vacuum parts to make the transfer box work, thats what the 'switch' does, split of the transfer boxes and fit your original totally manual transfer to your new 5 speed box.

do you have any gearbox gear at all? if you do select it and leave it with clutch down, then on the teansfer lever try all the settings, if you move appropriately in high2, high4 and low 4 then the transfer is fine

yes i have every gear except 4th, but everythings noisey? are you sayin then that if i can use all the gears including fourth in 4wd then the ransfer box is ok? i have tried this and fourth doesnt work in 4wd either....

just select 1st gear on main gearbox, foot down on clutch, engine running, then try the 2h, 4h n and 4L on the transfer box, if the vehicle mooves and the front propshsft moove for 4wd then the transfer box is fine, the other way to test it is seperate it off the main gearbox and turn the shaft n select levers all by hand.

i know what you mean took me a while to find your comment! thats what we are doing, the guy says hes going to throw in the T/B as he cant be bothered to take it off so were on a winner. thanks to all who have posted to this topic i really appreciate it even if i get a little frustrating to some at times! thankyou for all your kind good solid advice.
