Bought a Rotting Fourtrak. Someone Please Tell Me It's Worth The Welding...

Forum:

Folks,

My old faithful 196K Monterey (badged trooper) having been fatally front-ended by a tractor, I looked at something else, and read good things about the Fourtrak. I'd always been attracted by it's no-nonsense approach, and that former owners looked back on them with fondness. Oh, and it would tow 3.5 tonnes, a fact that I've never been able to fathom considering its size. The Monterey was plated for 2600kgs.

I found a local one. 113K 1998, 10 months MOT, and took a good look underneath, under the bonnet, and decided to buy. 2K. Done. An honest-seeming seller, a former owner of several, who had bought the car for his wife, who took a dislike to it. It had to go.

I've been messing around with something mechanical since 1976, thought I'd at least learnt something, but I'm now kicking myself that I didn't poke a little bit harder with the screwdriver underneath...

When I looked at the 'trak, I noticed recent work on the sills, but didn't quite look hard enough elsewhere. The floor-pan in the passenger footwell, just ahead of the wheelarches has holes the size of beermats.

Such is the state of the rot that it would have failed an MOT at least two years ago. The MOT certificate came without advisories...

Fortunately, I have a beefy MIG (Clarke 151), decent self-darkening mask, and hopefully some willingness to get the thing welded up. It may take some time.

When I drive the truck, I seem to grin a lot. When I peel back the carpets, I want to cry.

So, please convince me that I'm not going to be facing a losing battle with metal maggots on this car. And tell me that it's worth it. Right now I need a dollop of motivation...

Anyone else been this way themselves?

doo it, remove the carpets, shine it up, weld in a plate, done, these things doo need screwdrivers round them before buying, especially the independants as they rot worse than the older better built leafers.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Aggreed. They just make you

Aggreed.
They just make you smile when you are driving them,

I dont use mine anywhere near as much as I should,

I usualy drive my bemmer as my every day car, gets its arse kicked a few times, but with the old fourtrak, I just seem to drive that completly different, just sonter about,

Mine needed a fair bit of work done to it when I got it, dont get me wrong I knew the amount of work that needed done to it when I bought it,

My younger brother said he could do it no problem, So I went for it.

Brilliant off road, no taking that away from it,

As you probarly noticed they are pretty basic, that sort of put me off at first but Im glad I went for it.

The fourtrak gives me some great fun offroad and makes me smile when driving it normaly,

If you have the time to sort it, I definetly would,

Suppose its easy for me to say though as it was my brother that did the work to it,

Good luck

Beemers do it sideways

I would never be put off

I would never be put off because of rust, especially if you own a welder. These motors are always worth it, they don't break as much as landys and the performance is amazing.
I took mine to Salisbury plains yesterday and it loved what ever I chucked at it( lots of mud and lots of water).

I take my hat off to diahatsu they knew how to make fourtracks last.

tip tested too!

lol i tipped my fourtrak on the A93 the other week on snow, it did next to no damage at all leaving the car still roadworthy! infact, an hour later i started her up and she went rite away no fuss!!! really safe vehicle, felt totaly safe when i tipped her!, this is not to suggest that tipping them is a good idea though as i shat myself when it happened!!!,but just thought id share!

Goose 1985. Thats a nice part

Goose 1985.

Thats a nice part of the country, A93.

Good long stretch of road, Aberdeen to Perth if Im not mistaken,

Used to deliver up there a good few years ago, some parts of the scenery are breathtaking,

Cant remember if it was Banchory or Aboyne, would gamble it was Aboyne though, there was a wee tight road that used to take you back over to the A90, I think it was called devils elbow or something,

That could be a scary wee road lol.

But I can see how you ended up on your side on that road (A90)with the snow,

Beemers do it sideways

was the single most....

was the single most scaryest day of my life lol, Biggrin however yes it was extreem conditions afterall!! the scenary is stunning up here, roads are hairy, just got home from work to find a lorry overturned on the road! thats with no snow! i know aboyne well, and banchory. have heard of the devils elbow too but dont fancy a trip there any time soon! still repairing my truck!

The End of The Story...

I started this thread...

Sadly, it has to go, and is now in the classifieds section. Please take a look there, or pm me.

Plenty of welding practice available on this one!

I've simply run out of time and inclination, with family, home and voluntary commitments mushrooming. I need a month with six weekends in it, each weekend consisting of four days, and each day being 48 hours long...

All very sad, as I love these machines.

How bad is it?? My Sportrak

How bad is it??

My Sportrak decided to rot from the inside out, and looked like this.

Then looked like this.

Now like this.

So if you can DIY do it.

Mud makes excellent Toothpaste.

Th plate I used is propper

Th plate I used is propper 3mm stuff so will be a LOT stronger than the chassis.

Tbh I`m on the look out for a new chassis, and this is a fix to allow me to use the vehicle over the bad weather in Jan on.

I would love a new chassis, but can`t get them anywhere.

If your looking to make sure yours is ok, make sure all drain holes are unblocked, and that any chassis treatment is done inside too, as you can coat the outside as much as you want if water gets inside (which it does) then all that will be holding the rust together is the outside coating. And NEVER paint with Hammerite Paint, as thats what "Hid" the mess from me.
