rear shock

Forum:

snapped rear shock on sportrak 1991 , it has the three stage damper fitted.

are rear shocks different for sportraks with 3 stage damper compared to sportraks without Unknw

would these fit Unknwhttp://www.milneroffroad.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=19_307_3064_3939&product_id=14946

Shocks.

You can fit none electric shocks provided they fit the specification -length, bolt eyes etc. Much cheaper than trying to source 'like' for 'like' parts.
Three stage are the electric dampers. Remove and isolate the connectors. Remove the working damper to use as a comparison for length, eye bolts ets. Fit normal, none electric, dampers and all will be OK.

If you search this site for 'shocks','dampers','rear shocks' etc etc you should get details about the replacements done by other members. [SEARCH box top right}

The front are not 3stage

The front are not 3stage shocks. Only the rear were adjustable for soft/normal/hard motorway driving. Intended to give a better ride to the rear of the Sporty. After a few years driving the difference disappeared - the 3stage often failed and set itself as 'normal'.
So unless the front shocks are leaking or failing, just change the rear.

PS ... I see some are suggesting welding a broken shock!!!!
Gas filled .....boooooom.
Oil filled ...... boils.

Buy new ..... you only have one life and a sheared shock can over turn your sporty. A welded shock, or leaking shock, will fail a MOT.

lol

have you ever done it before mace?

DONT DO IT!!! the last time i

DONT DO IT!!! the last time i welded a shock the resulting explosion caused a earthquake large enough to be felt in oslo where that bloke seems to live, best off spending say £500 on some genuine ones with that silly hard/soft sh*t that way the cost of a pair of shocks will be about the same as a whole new car.

its snapped at the thin part

it snapped at the thin point where the bottom circular bit meets main the telescopic part.

i thought of welding but its lost any fluid that was in it surely? as where it snapped created a small hole

ahh right

bin job then, but only if it moves in and out easy, if it hasnt lost anything, weld it back on, just put on ramps and tack back together, no need to remove. you can replace with standard dampers after removing those units but I think if I remember rightly, its not a 'straightforward' swop and slight bit of fabrication work must take place for a top mount......

Fit them.

Disconnect the electrical connector and cap them off/insulate ... no further use. The 3stage were just soft/medium/hard driving. After a few years each stage gave the same ride since the shocks always softened.

If the new none electric shocks are the same length and the eyes fit, then fit them. They will be 'gas or fluid filled' shocks. The only difference is you have the same 'stiffness' for all road surfaces whilst much more cash remains in your pocket rather than wasted on electric shocks.!

OMG.

Why not replace with a big rubber band?
Seems in 'if-theres-mud' country of Norway anything can get an MOT.

no.uk

dunno why it shows as norway on the website, im in east anglia and no I think when your in ya 30's that doesnt really class as youths, so whats wrong with rewelding things that were already welded then?
