Fuel Tank

Forum:

Do '91 Sportraks have pressurized fuel tanks?
Because whenever we stop at the pumps there is a loud hiss as we remove the filler cap.

Same thing happens to my 96

Same thing happens to my 96 'trak! I've asked the question before on another forum and there are some horror stories of people having their fuel tanks sucked inward and distorted. The tank breather that lets air in to replace the fuel as it's used up should stop this from happening. I have run my tank down from full to almost empty without removing the cap and haven't had a problem.

I can only imagine that there's a valve that doesn't let gases out, only in. So when the car is sat unused for a while (no fuel going out of the tank) pressure builds up (petrol is volatile so some evapourates) and then this hisses out when you open the cap. A similar thing happens when you open a jerry can that's had petrol in for a while. A short drive to the petrol station probably isn't enough to remove the built up pressure. Having said this, I filled up with some petrol after an hour driving today and I think it hissed then. Any other theories?

fuel tank

when i drained my tank before lowering it to repair it i noticed if i didnt remove the filler cap it still drained but as soon as i removed filler cap it gushed out of drain hole also there are two small pipes that come back up to the filler nozel but these are sealed by the rubber seal on filler cap when it is tightened in place.so when cap is removed it will let air in or out of tank.
fred

you didnt find any other

you didnt find any other pipes connected to the tank then when removed?

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

fuel tank

didnt remove tank completely just lowered it so i could repair the leak.
i didnt remove any pipes at all. i only mentioned the two pipes as i assume they must be some sort of breather for tank. (but i am not a mecanic by any stretch of your imagination) so cant be sure.
(there seems to be a little million pipes connected to tank) thats why i was reluctant to remove tank completely.

its got a breather/vapour

its got a breather/vapour system above the wheel arch in the wing, it acts as a breather, if blocked you will get the hiss in the tank.

breather /vapour

is that the thicker pipe (same bore as the one going to pump) that comes out of the top corner of the tank under wheel arch?

Fuel return line

I think at lest one of those pipes returns usused fuel from the engine. This is just something I was told when working on that wheel arch with a mechanic.

The breather is a small

The breather is a small plastic, circular container connected to one of the fuel tank vent pipes.

These are basically a small steel ball held centrally between two springs, often they fill with mud, or just sieze due to rust and corrosion. Trace the pipes up the side of the vehicle and you will find the breather canister, remove it and fill with a good penetrating oil. Often this will free it and you should be able to suck and blow through it and feel a little resistance.

If it will not free off simply replace it with a small inline fiel filter, these are about £1 and worth changing every year.
