Could it be possible to put a big powerful V8 in a '91 Sportrak with a bit of effort Scratch one-s head

By describing the engine as

By describing the engine as 'big' and the car as 'Sportrak' you're asking a bit much. I guess the anything's possible rule applies as always though...

V8 in USA Rocky on Youtube type in: wizerulz

I have a US Rocky which I believe you call a Feroza. It is powered by a 414 cubic inch 6.8 litre Dodge small block V8 making approximately 550 BHP.

The drivetrain was converted to rear wheel drive and it has Dodge running gear including the Automatic transmission and 4.56 posi-traction Differential.

There are several videos of it on youtube there is plenty of room for a UK Rover V8 or similar once you cut out the front differential cradle,

You can see videos of it on youtube after typing wizerulz in the search.

cheers from the USA!

Of course... its just down to

Of course... its just down to making engine mounts, moving the radiator, mating it to a gearbox / transfer box, maybe fabricating a sump, dent in the bonnet so it will close, and then sit back and enjoy smoking the rear tyres out in every gear!

and....

a chassis, suspension and braking system that cant cope......

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Anything is possible, and

Anything is possible, and over the years I have done many such conversions, my current F20 runs a supercharged V8 GMC diesel, but thats a much stronger chassis than yours which is in perfect condition, but still strengthened.

You will need to find an engine which will fit your space, preferably with a gearbox, then you will undoubtedly have to do lots of work to graft a strong transfer case to the gearbox. You will undoubtedly have to replace the axles with stronger items and either make propshafts, or have them made to fit the transfer case and axles.

You will have to fabricate new mountings and crossmembers to fit the engine/gearbox/transfer case to get it to fit, and numerous mounting brackets for ancillaries.

You will have to uprate the front suspension to cope with any additional weight of the donor engine, as a rule of thumb if the donor engine is 20% heavier then the current engine then uprate the suspension by 20%, and work from there.

Then you will have the fitting of all the ancillaries, power steering pump, vacuum pump, alternator, viscous or other fan, and many more things to consider. Then there is the additional items such as radiators for the cooling, and possibly an oil or transmission cooler.

Uprating the brakes is essential and many possibilities exist, you could fit vented discs if not already fitted, or totally replace the calipers and discs with a totally different system to improve its performance.

Then you will find you have many problems, this will take a considerable amount of time to sort out all these issues, and sort out all the snagging.

If you have formed a budget then quadruple it, if you have formed a tinescale them multiply it ten fold.

More powerful alternative engines for Fourtrak

I have a Fourtrak project underway and I'm at the stage where I'm considering the idea of fitting a more powerful diesel engine into the Fourtrak. Initially I was thinking of either of the big 3.0l or 4.2l diesel engines from the Toyota Land cruiser, but does anyone know if those engines can be fitted to the fourtrak, or has anyone done that before? Alternatively what performance enhancements are available for the fourtrak that would make a significant difference? Thanks for any help or ideas.

By way of an alternative approach can say an engine from a BMW be fitted, for example the 3.0d found in the x5?

It is possible to fit the BMW

It is possible to fit the BMW engine, in fact it has already been done by an Italian company called Bertone, they fitted the older 2.0L petrol BMW lump and called it the Freeclimber, it was fitted to the Fourtrak and Sportrak to get round the 2.0L engine ruling of Italian taxation legislation which makes anything over 2.0L very expensive.
