4WD= very useless!

Forum:

Tried the 4wd on our '91 Sportrak lately and basically It didn't do anything! Put it in 4H and all it did was rev at 2500rpm, not go in reverse and travel forwards in top gear (because the revs kept going up itself, i was forced to change gear) at a speed of no higher than 20. I then put it in 4L and it wouldn't move in both directions in any gear and tickover ended up at 4000rpm. i then tried putting it in 2wd and whenever i tried to move it stalled and took forever to start. i eventually got the thing going again but it was bloody hard work. does anyone know what might be wrong with it as i have no idea.

is your clutch ok?

it's a bit dodgy!

it works most of the time but every single time i try to reverse it takes about 5 attempts to get it in reverse gear and it makes the loudest crunching sound ive ever heard.

clutch

If you can move the gearlever into reverse OK when the engine isn't going, but you can't get it in with the engine going and the clutch pressed in, then it means the clutch isn't releasing ...... Which means that the clutch is knackered.

It never works

It really struggles to get in reverse in any situation Sad

basically

you have a pretty shagged out drive train....bit obvious really tbh.

Its only reverse gear that is rubbish

It goes into all the other gears great (90% of the time) but actually im not sure if the gearbox has any oil in it so id better check that very soon. Could the 4WD problem be the transfer box?

Yeah, the clutch!

I had a problem like this but on an old rover 216, the clutch was just about dead, struggled getting it into reverse some times and i'd go to set off, it wouldn't set off but the revs would sit at about 3000rpm for 5-10seconds and then slowly drop back down to idle speed, all with the accelerator released. It was all solved with a new clutch kit.

Hope ya get it sorted!

strange...

Done nothing to the sportrak at all and it's all working properly now, reverse 4wd, the lot.
