Had full Service done on my YRV Turbo including Autobox fluid and filter

Forum:

Hi All,

Just had a full service done on my YRV Turbo, which included the ATF Fluid and filter replacement.

Just thought I'd give you a heads up, that as well as having the ATF fluid done I also opted for the ATF filter replaced (Took 3 months to get through the Daihatsu Garage) which Daihatsu Dave was good enough to reaearch and find on. The conclusion is that the oil in my Auto box (Which I only had done 3 years ago by another garage who I no longer use) was black and in need of a fluid change (Garage showed me all the results), but also which was worrying was that the filter was in desperate need of changing as it appeared to be no longer doing its job filtering. The filter looked to be very crusty looking and no longer spongy in appearance (been in the car for over 8 years).

The downside to getting this done is cost and work involved, the entire engine and gearbox had to be dropped from the car as getting to the filter in the autobox is blocked by the subframe on the YRV, but I must say i am glad I have had this done now after the findings. Even though I have/had problems with my Autotbox (Touch wood), I am now glad that I have had this done and hopefully prevention is better than cure. Smile

Cheers,

Jon.

3 years!! These gearboxes

3 years!!

These gearboxes are known to have a hard life with the heat so regular gearbox oil changes are a must if you want reliable service from it.

I drain my gearbox oil at every engine oil change, which is every 2000-3000.

You only get 2 litres out but then after 2 or 3 changes any old original oil to be diluted with fresh oil.

But in the service manual it

But in the service manual it has no mention of the Auto Gearbox requirement for draining etc... Waynephatg and myself only came across this by accident as at the back of the Owners Manual there is mention that the gearbox oil has a 6 years change cycle. This only came about due to issues with owners having the flashing 'D' light and no change ups on their gearboxes etc..

I take it you have also changed the Gearbox filter as well then?
As the one that came out of mine was shall we say not upto the job anymore Sad

I don't go on manufacturers

I don't go on manufacturers service schedules regarding oil changes, they are only there to enable the car to reach a respectable and reasonable lifespan.

After all, they want to sell new cars so making something that can last for decades and into galactic mileages without attention is not on their wish list!

Good clean oil is the key, A filter in the gearbox is not even needed if the oil is always fresh and free of debris. Many auto gearboxes (certainly older ones) do not have any internal filter.

ATF Fluid & Filter

Hi guys,

The ATF filter on the YRV Turbo is the same as the Daihatsu Sirion Automatic with K3-VE engine, or the Perodua Myvi Automatic with K3-VE engine, so you have plenty of options to get it. You'd need some gasket sealant as well to put everything back.

You can see the picture of the ATF filter there. That's the YRV turbo engine & transmission in a Perodua Myvi, so there's no subframe in the way.

When you drop the ATF pan to change the filter you'll use more or less 4L of ATF, so do be prepared for it. Every ATF change is around 2L. ATF is so cheap there's no need to skimp on it, original Daihatsu ATF-3 costs about 5 quids per liter over here, so I change it every 20,000 or every year, whichever first, beats changing the autobox. And changing the ATF is super easy, don't know why your garages are reluctant to change it.

Feel free to fire away questions.. I can find out if the subframe gets in the way as a lot of these YRV Turbo engines get fitted into the Perodua Kelisa which does use the subframe from the YRV.

Done my yrv turbo day ,

Was easier than I thought 2 hours but no problems ,
I used a crow bar to ease the engin over to get to the 3 10mm above the sub frame ,

Filter off
