DIY Charade Engine Mountings?

Forum:

In the process of taking the sump off recently, I noticed my front and rear engine mounting rubbers were split, the front one quite badly, though not all the way through.

I dunno if new mountings will be available here in Taiwan, (I'd guess not) or what the price is likely to be if they are.

There's quite a lot of discussion ont web of making DIY mountings for various cars, but they mostly seem to be casting new eurethane bushings in the centre of a "cage" mounting.

The Charade mounting is trickier since its an open bracket, and the rubber is loaded by engine torque(and is failing) in tension.

Anyone tried making one?

Engine/gearbox mounts

There is a hell of a lot of science in the design of engine mounting systems wrt NVH, not to mention the life and function of all flexible linkages to the engine including gear change, exhaust, drive shafts etc.

I'm sure you can source the correct ones directly from Japan and my advice is not to use anything other than genuine or pattern parts.

You can use

You can use sikaflex/tigerseal or other similar polyurethane sealant to fill up and firm up old rubber mounts. It works great!

There are a few grades available with different shore ratings.

Sikaflex 291, 221 and 255 are common ones used.

Although I used a lesser known brand, it worked a treat on my Charade GTti.

Was very easy,. removed the mount and cleaned up the rubber, (plus roughed it up a bit to get a good bond.)

Then layed it down flat with some cardboard underneath and filled it up halfway withe the sealer. After a few hours turned it over and filled it from other side.

So far I have only done the rear engine mount as the others are all in decent condition, Plus most of the movement seemed to be coming from the rear mount.

Plenty of info/photos to be found on google if you search sikaflex engine mounts.
