A few things to watch out for on our ageing pride and joys

Forum:

Okay I have now owned my YRV turbo for close on 5 years (time flies and all that).
I thought it be best to put a list of things I have had to had replaced which may help other owners.

These are known for the YRV Turbo and should be looked at:

1).. Anti roll bar and backets which are prone to snap. Brackets were updated by Daihatsu but not all cars were done. Dee warranty at the time

2).. Water pump. My water pump was replaced last year, and lucky it was as it was starting to leak. Another one of those parts that don't last.

3).. Sills. Another Achilles heal on the YRv and possibly sirion. Check them especially if you have side skirts like most YRV and sirion models have as these can rot. Mine had started at the rear and fronts, and had to get welded to pass an MOT.

4).. Original y shaped exhaust. Some cars had them replaced under warranty due to rot. Again not all cars got the updated ones.

5).. The fuel pipe. This is a new one that I am now experiencing. They rust like mad. Now looking at gett g a new one fitted due to excessive rust and the likely failure. Again this needs checking by owners on both YRV and Sirion.

6).. O2/Lambda sensors. All cars have these and out of precaution I got mine changed. But there are reports of owners with cars not even hitting 100K miles of getting ECU lights coming on due to failing O2 sensors.

7).. Rear offside inner wheel bearing failure. Got both of mine changed on the last service. The inner offside bearing was FUBARRED. But as the car is light, you would never know it. Both sides and bearings swapped with new ones.

Hopefully this information may come in useful to owners. Smile

On my cars last MOT a slight

On my cars last MOT a slight amount of rear bearing play was marked as a advisory. I have never heard any bearing rumble noise from the rear though.

Not too bad though, Rear bearings were £9.50 when I checked, and it looks a doddle to tap them in.

Fuel pipe, do you mean the

Fuel pipe, do you mean the filler neck tube, or the actual fuel supply line from tank?

A acceptable repair for a corroded section of fuel line is to cut out the affected rusted section, and use rubber high pressure fuel hose instead.

Have done that a few times to various cars, using the braided stuff.

The actual pipe that runs

The actual pipe that runs from the filler neck down I'm afraid Sad new part from Daihatsu @ £136.00 including VAT. Sad funnily enough they have these in stock. Something owners are now facing to be in stock perhaps?

remove , wire brush the rusty

remove , wire brush the rusty areas and then JB weld or quiksteel over it.

Or cut the affected area out and use flexi fuel hose to join it together.

Or get it copied by a exhaust fabricator or engineering shop.

I think its getting beyond

I think its getting beyond that stage Sad Decisions....decisions.
The only issue I have at the moment is if I leave this much longer and I come to fill the car up at a petrol station if the pipe will then finally let go and I leave a nice puddle of petrol over the forecourt Sad
Going to have to have a think on this one... But again this is something all owners should have a look out for on their cars as well, as its another achilies heal on these rare cars. Smile

The issue in the UK is with Winter the roads are covered in Road Salt to help in Icy and snowy conditions. |We also have to make sure our cars are wax sealed underneath to help protect them from the elements. Alright for those who live in hot countries like South Africa Wink

It's farmers muck and

It's farmers muck and damp/wet roads as well.

If you can avoid going out when roads are wet or damp, and always rinse away trapped mud from the arches and sills.

It's hard work keeping a older car in perfect condition if it's used as a daily driver.

The rear inner bearing on the

The rear inner bearing on the offside has been reported by a couple of owners to fail. Another Daihatsu cover up? But you would never know unless you come to change them.

Just to add to the list...

- Rear wheel arches. Again if not kept in check, then these can suffer. Most cars will suffer this in their time, and luckily Daihatsu Metal seems to be made of stronger stuff.
Getting mine done next week together with the fuel pipe at a bodyshop who sorted out my new body kit for me Smile
